'I'm Already in the Mix for England Tour, Next Step Is...': Shardul Thakur's Bold Statement After Ranji Heroics
1 month ago | 5 Views
India's fast-bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur once again proved to be Mumbai's key player, achieving a remarkable nine-wicket match haul, including six wickets in the first innings, which propelled his team to a decisive 152-run victory over Haryana, securing a place in the Ranji Trophy semifinals in Kolkata on Tuesday. After the match, Thakur expressed his aspirations for a return to the Indian Test squad for the upcoming tour of England in June, stating that he is merely awaiting official confirmation.
Thakur played a pivotal role in giving Mumbai a narrow 14-run advantage in the first innings with figures of 6 for 58. He then added three more wickets in the second innings, partnering with left-arm pacer Royston Dias, who achieved his first five-wicket haul, as Mumbai dismissed Haryana for a mere 201 runs in their second innings.
In his remarks to the media, Thakur indicated that he is focused on making a comeback to the national team as he anticipates confirmation of his selection for the England tour in June.
"When there is no spot in the team, it naturally leads to disappointment. When you are not playing and are at home, it tends to occupy your thoughts more," he remarked. "However, once I am on the field, my complete concentration is on the match—whether it is club cricket, the Ranji Trophy, the IPL, or representing India. Every match holds the same significance for me, and I strive to perform to the best of my abilities in every game, without any distractions."
"Indeed, I firmly believe I am in contention for the England tour. The next objective is to secure my place in the team and achieve selection. That has always been my aim."
"Currently, I am competing at the Ranji Trophy level. International cricket represents the pinnacle of our aspirations. It is always at the forefront of my mind; the motivation to represent my country propels me forward. That passion and drive never diminish."
Thakur has had an impressive Ranji Trophy season, taking 30 wickets at an average of 21.10, while also amassing 396 runs at an average of 44, which includes three half-centuries and one century.
Will Shardul Thakur next feature in County Cricket?
The Mumbai star has indicated that he remains open to the possibility, although he acknowledged that his decision will primarily hinge on his inclusion in the Indian team for the Test series against England.
Thakur stated, "Should I receive an offer, I would certainly participate. It would provide an excellent opportunity for new experiences. At present, there are no definitive plans, but county cricket features 6-to 7 matches during that period. If I am selected, it will assist me in acclimatizing to English conditions before the tour."
