‘If Kane Williamson Hadn’t Been…’: How Rachin Ravindra Seized His Chance and Never Looked Back

New Zealand's campaign in the ICC Champions Trophy has been significantly enhanced by the impressive performance of Rachin Ravindra, who is solidifying his reputation as one of the premier young talents in international cricket. In the semifinal against South Africa, Ravindra scored his second century of the tournament, amassing 108 runs off 101 balls, and was named player of the match, propelling his team into the final.
Ravindra's emergence as a standout player began during the ICC ODI World Cup in 2023, where he achieved the remarkable feat of scoring three centuries in his debut tournament. However, New Zealand legend Tim Southee noted that Ravindra's opportunity to excel was somewhat fortuitous, as he capitalized on the chance when it arose.
“He’s still young, but he possesses a mature mindset. If Kane Williamson had not been slightly unfit due to his knee injury during last year's ODI World Cup, Ravindra might not have had this opportunity,” Southee remarked on ESPNcricinfo.
“Nonetheless, everything happens for a reason. He is always eager to learn and actively seeks guidance from seasoned players like Williamson. His commitment to improvement is particularly noteworthy for a young player.”
In the semifinal, Ravindra received strong support from Williamson, who also scored a century. Both players will be crucial to New Zealand's batting strategy in the final against India in Dubai on Sunday.
‘He’s a player for the ages…'
Ravindra's talent has garnered admiration from one of the esteemed white-ball openers, Matthew Hayden, who articulated the reasons behind the 25-year-old southpaw's remarkable success at the top of the batting order.
“He effectively rotates the strike and possesses a proficient sweep shot along with a solid down-the-ground shot, making him a well-rounded player in terms of both strike rate and scoring rate. He is truly a player for the ages,” Hayden remarked, offering high commendation.
“His cover drives are particularly impressive. He positions himself exceptionally well. While he is predominantly a front-foot player, he can also adjust his stance, leveraging his height to play square of the wicket,” the Australian added.
Although Rachin has already achieved an extraordinary five centuries in ICC tournaments, overcoming India in Dubai will present a significant challenge. Nevertheless, the Kiwi has previously found success against the Indian team and enters the final with the opportunity to become the tournament's highest run-scorer, currently trailing leader Ben Duckett by just one run.
