IPL’s Impact Player Rule: Revolutionizing Cricket Strategy in 2025

New Delhi: When the Impact Player rule was rolled out in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2023, it was mainly seen as a strategic addition to enhance team dynamics. Fast forward two years, and it’s taken on a new role. It’s become a crucial opportunity for players on the edge of selection, giving them a chance to make a comeback and regain their footing.
Take Karun Nair, for example. A Test triple centurion back in 2016, he hadn’t been a go-to choice in the IPL for the past three years. Despite consistently performing well in domestic cricket, this year he truly shone, racking up 779 runs in just eight innings at an incredible average of 389.50 in the one-day Vijay Hazare Trophy. He also ended up as the second-highest scorer for Ranji Trophy champions Vidarbha, with 863 runs at an average of 53.94.
However, after being away from the tournament for several years and with a less-than-stellar IPL record—1506 runs in 6 matches over nine seasons—teams were hesitant to trust the 33-year-old.
Even though Delhi Capitals brought him back after an eight-year gap, it took four matches and an injury to Faf du Plessis for them to include Nair in their lineup. Thanks to the Impact Player rule, he made his way back into the team against the Mumbai Indians on Sunday. For a player who was overlooked during the auction and team selections, his impressive 89 off 40 balls served as a powerful reminder of his talent.
We lost a key player in Faf, so we knew those of us on the bench had to be ready at a moment's notice. I was mentally prepared and eager for the chance. I'm really glad I got it, and now it's all about making the most of this opportunity, Nair shared after the Capitals' match against the Mumbai Indians.
Similarly, leg spinner Karn Sharma was making his return to MI after eight years. This season, he faced competition from other spin bowlers like the young Vignesh Puthur. However, when experience was needed, the 37-year-old was brought in as an Impact Player. He delivered a crucial performance with figures of 3/36, helping MI stage an impressive comeback against DC.
“The IPL is unpredictable; you never know if you’ll be in the playing eleven or twelve. You just have to trust that you’ll perform when your moment comes,” Karn remarked after the game.
Both players prepared for this match amid uncertainty and stepped up with standout performances, perfectly suited for moments like these. Their efforts could now influence their chances of regular selection.
Then there's DC's Ashutosh Sharma, who was utilized by Punjab Kings as an Impact Player in three matches last season. DC decided to follow suit, and after showcasing his fearless batting in those situations, he proved he could be more than just a situational player.
For these athletes, the Impact Player rule is more than just a tactical move; it’s a chance to prove themselves. A single strong performance can mean the difference between sitting on the sidelines and being in the starting lineup. Teams are willing to take risks on players, knowing it won’t disrupt their core lineup.
For years, the IPL has been a breeding ground for stars. With the introduction of the Impact Player rule, the league is also becoming a place where careers can be revived and reputations restored.
