‘IPL is King, But SA20 Aims to Be the Next Big Thing,’ Says Graeme Smith

The primary objective of the SA20 is to establish itself as the largest T20 league globally, second only to the Indian Premier League, according to league commissioner Graeme Smith. The renowned South African cricketer noted that the league, which recently concluded its third season, has successfully addressed many of the essential elements that the IPL also embraced during its formative years.
“We recognize that the IPL is the dominant force, and our goal is to become the premier league outside of India,” Smith stated during a discussion with Indian media. “We have laid many of the foundational aspects correctly, similar to the IPL, such as high-quality cricket and attracting fans to the matches.”
Regarded as one of South Africa's most accomplished captains, Smith was a prominent figure when the IPL commenced in 2008. He represented the Rajasthan Royals during the first three seasons and subsequently played for Pune Warriors India in 2011.
‘We have got the core right’
Smith has been at the forefront of the SA20 since its establishment and has remarked that the IPL surpasses all other T20 leagues globally. Nevertheless, the primary objective of the SA20 is to position itself as the leading alternative, a goal it has partially achieved, as players have informed Smith that the tournament boasts an exceptionally high level of competition.
Smith further noted that the league has made efforts to incorporate local elements into the fan experience to appeal to South African cricket enthusiasts. He emphasized that while the SA20 has successfully adopted key aspects that contribute to the IPL's success, it has also tailored its entertainment offerings to resonate with local audiences. “We certainly integrate South African elements into our entertainment and what our fans appreciate in the stadium. This experience is specifically designed for South Africa. However, I believe we have successfully captured the essential elements we need to get right. If we can cultivate a league that can thrive alongside the IPL at a secondary level, we would be very pleased,” Smith stated.
