IPL: Ponting Pleased with PBKS Roster Depth; Shreyas to Bat Third

Chandigarh: Sixteen captains over 17 IPL seasons is a significant statistic that highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Punjab Kings year after year. Their achievements, such as finishing third in the inaugural IPL in 2008 and being runners-up in 2014, are often overlooked. The recent eighth and ninth place finishes in 2023 and 2024, however, cast a negative light on the team's performance.
Punjab Kings are optimistic that this season will mark a turnaround. With Ricky Ponting as the new coach and Shreyas Iyer stepping in as the 17th captain—someone with whom Ponting shares a strong rapport—the team is poised for a fresh start. Iyer, acquired for ₹26.75 crore at the auction, arrives with high expectations and confidence, having led Kolkata Knight Riders to the 2024 title and played a pivotal role in India's Champions Trophy victory. This is particularly significant given the slow pitches expected as the Indian summer intensifies.
The Punjab Kings have undergone a transformation. Glenn Maxwell, who was the leading run-scorer for the team with 552 runs in 2014, has returned. His ability to play a wide range of shots and contribute with spin bowling is anticipated to positively impact the team's performance. Additionally, young left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh, who was the top bowler for PBKS in 2017 and showcased remarkable composure during the 2024 T20 World Cup final, has continued to improve.
On Tuesday, Ponting and Iyer spoke to the media, expressing optimism about the team's prospects.
“We have assembled an exciting group of 25 players… The advantage is that we have backup options for nearly every position, which adds great depth to the team,” Ponting remarked.
The former Australian batting legend, who coached Delhi Capitals last season, further stated: “A strong coaching challenge is always beneficial. We have nothing to lose and no reason to fear. I am eager to contribute my best. The team should exhibit a destructive and dynamic presence on the field.”
The partnership between Ponting and Iyer will be under close observation, particularly for a franchise that has faced challenges in recent seasons.
Ponting is optimistic that the efforts made during the auction will translate into success on the field. “Our goal was to acquire young and dynamic players with our substantial budget. We aimed to include leaders and match-winners like Yuzvendra Chahal among others in our squad. We are pleased to have secured high-quality Indian players as well as exceptional overseas talent.”
Historically, PBKS has struggled with its home performance. Mullanpur is set to host four matches, while Dharamsala will hold three. Their first match is against the Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad on March 25.
For the 2024 season, PBKS retained only Prabhsimran Singh and Shashank Singh, while they reacquired Arshdeep using the right-to-match card for ₹18 crore. The Australian contingent includes all-rounder Marcus Stoinis and wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis.
“During the auction, it was quite apparent who I wanted to appoint as captain… we had a strong working relationship at DC. I am confident he will leave a significant impact on the team in his captaincy role.”
Iyer mentioned that he plans to bat at No. 3 in the tournament. “I am quite certain about that, provided the coach gives his approval,” he added with a touch of humor.
