The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has implemented some actions in response to the terror attack in the Pahalgam area of Kashmir. Terrorists opened fire near the well-known tourist spot on Tuesday afternoon, resulting in the deaths of at least 26 individuals. This marks the deadliest incident in the Kashmir valley since the Pulwama attack in 2019. As the nation continues to show sorrow and grief in the wake of this tragedy, the Indian cricket board has chosen to prohibit fireworks during the IPL 2025 match between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Mumbai Indians at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Wednesday (April 23).
Sources informed Hindustan Times that players and umpires will don armbands to honor the victims who lost their lives in this tragic assault.
A minute’s silence will be observed prior to the match featuring Pat Cummins' SRH and Hardik Pandya's MI.
"We are appalled by this attack. We have made the decision to refrain from having cheerleaders and fireworks during today’s IPL match in Hyderabad. Players and umpires will wear black armbands. A minute's silence will also be observed before the game begins,” a source from the BCCI shared with Hindustan Times.
Previously, Virat Kohli and Hardik Pandya had taken to Instagram to convey their condolences regarding the events that unfolded in Pahalgam on Tuesday.
Kohli expressed, "Deeply saddened by the heinous attack in Pahalgam on innocent people. Heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims. Praying for peace and strength to families of all those who lost their lives and justice to be served for this cruel act. "
Meanwhile, Hardik Pandya stated, "Devastated by the news from Pahalgam. My thoughts are with those affected and their families. "
Former England captain Kevin Pietersen, who serves as the mentor for Delhi Capitals in IPL 2025, also took to X to denounce the attack. "I see flags flying at half mast in Delhi today and rightly so. Despicable what happened in Kashmir yesterday! My thoughts are with all those who lost their lives and their families and friends," he wrote.
What happened in Pahalgam?
As per the Kashmir police, a minimum of four terrorists shot at tourists from a short distance. The victim's daughter informed news agency PTI that the terrorists primarily focused on male tourists.
"There were numerous tourists present, but the terrorists specifically aimed at male tourists after inquiring if they were Hindu or Muslim," she stated to PTI.
After this incident in Kashmir, Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, also shortened his trip to Saudi Arabia and returned to Delhi.
