IPL 2025: The Battle of Legends and Rising Stars Begins

Kolkata: As the Indian Premier League approaches its coming-of-age milestone, the season opener remains a consistent element linking its past and present. However, many aspects have evolved, arguably for the better.

Local legends have been replaced by selections based on performance, with more Indian players commanding high salaries. The current system is supported by a scouting network that identifies talent as young as 13 from relative obscurity, all with a singular focus on achieving victory.

This focus is crucial. In a landscape where England's dynamic cricket once threatened to overshadow its strategic counterpart, India's consecutive triumphs in international white-ball formats underscore the importance of prioritizing winning.

The IPL, now in its seventeenth season, has consistently fostered this winning mentality and is currently undergoing its own transformation. For prominent players like MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, and R Ashwin, the conclusion of their careers appears imminent. Even though they may not hold captaincy roles, their final performances should be noteworthy events.

Ajinkya Rahane also deserves mention, considering his current situation. It is unprecedented for a defending IPL champion to part ways with its captain, a move KKR executed last year before the auction. Following a significant investment to reacquire Venkatesh Iyer, it seemed inevitable that he would take the lead. However, KKR surprised everyone by appointing Rahane, aligning with their philosophy of prioritizing continuity over individual leadership. "For us, it’s about keeping it simple," Rahane stated at an event on Wednesday.

However, the situation is not straightforward. For KKR, witnessing mentor Gautam Gambhir and nearly their entire coaching staff depart alongside their captain must have been challenging. Nevertheless, they have successfully retained their strong spin bowling unit. “This is something that happens every year,” Varun Chakravarthy remarked candidly on Friday. “Even if you secure a championship, you will inevitably enter the auction, and core players are likely to change. Still, the management has managed to keep nearly nine members of the previous core intact.”

In addition to changing their captains, teams such as Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Delhi Capitals, Lucknow Super Giants, and Punjab Kings have experienced various complex transformations, all in hopes of breaking their title drought. Rajat Patidar stands out as the least recognized among this new group of captains, particularly since he has yet to play T20Is for India.

Despite RCB head coach Andy Flower asserting that the entire team is rallying behind an enthusiastic Patidar, it is clear that Kohli continues to be the central figure for RCB. A similar situation exists at CSK, where Dhoni remains a key presence, even as Ruturaj Gaikwad takes on the captaincy. If CSK can improve upon their fifth-place finish from 2024, they would consider it a success. In contrast, RCB faces greater pressure after reaching the semifinals in 2024.

On paper, the Delhi Capitals appear to be in a stronger position due to the continuity established with Axar Patel's promotion to captain. This change may also relieve KL Rahul of the captaincy burden, potentially enhancing his batting performance. He has experience in various roles, from opening the batting to anchoring the middle overs and finishing chases. However, this newfound freedom is a departure from his previous responsibilities. Conversely, Shreyas faces a different challenge as he joins the Punjab Kings, a team known for its instability regarding continuity.

The context surrounding these developments is quite fascinating. When Pant playfully hinted at his potential value on social media, it signaled that a significant transition was imminent. His departure from the Capitals, seemingly in pursuit of a more lucrative contract, places Pant in a precarious position. However, if he performs exceptionally and secures the IPL title, all past concerns will be overlooked. This is particularly crucial for him, as we have entered a period where his ability to influence matches is primarily viewed as relevant only in Test cricket.

On the strategic side, the recent rule modification permitting the use of two new balls during the second innings of night matches is noteworthy, especially in locations where dew may impact play. Flower considers this adjustment essential.

“I appreciate the rule that allows the captain to decide when to introduce a second ball in the latter part of the innings,” he remarked on Friday. “I have often questioned the umpires' hesitation to change the ball. In conditions where dew significantly influences the game, this is a very positive change.”
