IPL 2025 Shake-Up: BCCI Introduces 4 New Game-Changing Rules

One day prior to the commencement of the 18th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced updates to the playing conditions for IPL 2025. These changes, which include four new rules, were established following a meeting with captains, coaches, and managers at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai on March 20.
During this gathering, representatives from all ten IPL teams shared their insights and perspectives regarding various elements of the playing conditions. As a result of a collective agreement, the following modifications were made:
1) Use of saliva to shine the ball
Starting with the IPL 2025 season, bowlers will be allowed to use saliva to shine the ball. This decision, reached after discussions with all ten teams, signifies a return to traditional methods of ball maintenance. The previous prohibition on saliva, which was enacted during the COVID-19 pandemic, has now been revoked.
2) Replacement of wet ball to counter dew
To tackle the issues caused by dew in evening matches, the team bowling second will now have the option to request a ball replacement once after the 10th over.
The bowling captain is permitted to request a ball change, irrespective of the presence of visible dew. Upon receiving such a request, the umpires are required to substitute the ball with another that exhibits similar wear and tear. The bowling team does not have the option to select the replacement ball.
Furthermore, the umpires hold the power to change the ball at any point before the 10th over if it is considered excessively wet, misshapen, lost, or damaged. Should a captain seek a ball change in the 11th over due to it being misshapen, the umpires will assess the request and grant approval if it is justified.
If a further request is made after several overs solely due to dew, the umpires must replace the ball as previously outlined.
3) New Code of Conduct
Starting this season, a new Code of Conduct will be introduced for the TATA IPL 2025 season, featuring a demerit points system and suspension points that will remain in effect for 36 months.
4) Expansion of DRS Scope
The Decision Review System (DRS) has been broadened to encompass reviews for height-based no-balls and wide-balls outside the off-stump. The enhanced system will employ Hawk-Eye technology and ball-tracking to aid umpires in making precise and consistent rulings.
