New Delhi: The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has set up a temporary committee to manage the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) because of the ongoing “administrative instability” within the organization.

The terms of the BFI office bearers expired on February 2, but elections are still pending. HT previously reported on the administrative deadlock and the hold-up in election proceedings.

“The IOA has been keeping a close eye on the administrative situation at the Boxing Federation of India (BFI). According to the governing rules, elections for the BFI were supposed to take place by February 2, 2025. However, the elections have not occurred, leading to instability within the federation,” IOA president PT Usha mentioned in a letter on Monday, which HT has a copy of.

Several BFI officials reached out to Usha about the election delays, even though 24 BFI units had agreed to hold the elections on March 3.

“This office has received multiple complaints from stakeholders, including athletes, coaches, and relevant authorities, about the lack of participation of Indian boxers in key National and International events recently. This situation is harmful to the development and performance of Indian boxing globally and requires urgent action,” Usha stated.

Given the current circumstances, Usha announced, “an ad hoc Committee is being formed to manage the Boxing Federation of India’s affairs and ensure everything runs smoothly until free and fair elections can be held.”

Madhukant Pathak will lead the committee, with Rajesh Bhandari, DP Bhatt, Shiva Thapa, and Virendra Singh Thakur as members.

The temporary panel will quickly address the concerns raised by the boxing community, help athletes participate in upcoming international events, and work towards organizing the BFI elections as soon as possible.
