‘I wonder if Andy Murray can contribute to Novak Djokovic’s game’: Rublev questions Serbian’s coaching decision

In an effort to regain his competitive edge in 2025, Novak Djokovic has appointed Andy Murray as his coach, a decision made public in November of this year. Murray, who announced his retirement earlier this year, will join Djokovic on the court starting with the 2025 Australian Open.
This announcement has taken the tennis community by surprise, eliciting varied reactions from fans, analysts, and fellow players. World No. 8 Andrey Rublev expressed his confusion regarding the decision, questioning its potential benefits for Djokovic. However, he acknowledged that their friendship might provide Djokovic with valuable support throughout the season.
"Novak is one of the most successful players in tennis history. I am curious to see if Andy can enhance his game and introduce new strategies. On the flip side, their strong friendship could foster a productive partnership. It is important to recognize that positive energy can sometimes have a greater impact at this level than technical skills alone. Novak possesses an unparalleled understanding of tennis, and having Andy in his corner may rejuvenate his motivation. It will be fascinating to observe Andy's responses when Novak becomes overly emotional and expresses frustration towards his team," Rublev remarked.
Djokovic and Murray have faced each other 36 times, with Djokovic holding a 25-11 advantage overall and an 11-8 lead in finals. Their encounters include ten major tournaments, where Djokovic has triumphed 8-2. They are also one of only two male pairs to have competed in the finals of all four Grand Slam events, alongside Djokovic and Nadal.
In terms of surface performance, Djokovic leads 20-8 on hard courts and 5-1 on clay, while Murray has claimed victory in their two grass-court matches.
The two players are nearly the same age, with Murray being just a week older. They trained together as juniors, and Murray won their first encounter. In 2006, at the age of 19, they teamed up for doubles at the Australian Open but were eliminated in the first round.
