2 months ago | 5 Views
The ICC Champions Trophy, following a prolonged absence since the 2017 edition in which Pakistan triumphed over India in the final, is scheduled to make its highly awaited return in 2025. The tournament is set to take place from February 19 to March 9, providing an opportune moment to reflect on the top five run-scorers from previous tournaments.
1. Chris Gayle
Chris Gayle's status as a T20 icon is equally reflected in his performances during the Champions Trophy. Renowned for his aggressive batting approach, Gayle showcased his extraordinary power-hitting throughout the tournament.
In 17 matches, he accumulated 791 runs with an impressive average of 52.73, which includes three centuries and one half-century. Although he leads in total runs and boundaries with 101 fours, it is noteworthy that he does not hold the record for the most sixes. That distinction is held by Sourav Ganguly, who achieved 17 sixes, surpassing Gayle's total of 15.
2. Mahela Jayawardene
Mahela Jayawardene participated in five editions of the Champions Trophy, where the former Sri Lankan captain played 21 innings and was recognized for his consistency in anchoring the team's performance.
Despite not having scored a century in the tournament, Jayawardene accumulated a total of 742 runs with an average of 41.22, his highest score being an unbeaten 84. He ranks second on this list.
3. Shikhar Dhawan
Shikhar Dhawan, although having participated in merely two editions of the Champions Trophy, has left a significant mark on the tournament. As an opening batsman for India, the left-handed player has consistently provided strong starts for the team.
Throughout his appearances, Dhawan has recorded three centuries and three half-centuries, accumulating a total of 701 runs with an impressive average of 77.88.
4. Kumar Sangakkara
Kumar Sangakkara, the distinguished wicketkeeper-batter from Sri Lanka, demonstrated remarkable consistency by participating in 22 matches during the Champions Trophy.
He accumulated a total of 683 runs, achieving an average of 37.94, with a notable highlight being his impressive innings of 134 not out against England at the Oval. This performance was instrumental in securing a convincing seven-wicket victory for Sri Lanka in that encounter.
5. Sourav Ganguly
Sourav Ganguly showcased exceptional batting skills during the Champions Trophy. Participating in 13 matches and batting in 11 innings, the former Indian captain produced remarkable performances, including two unforgettable unbeaten centuries.
His highest score was achieved in Nairobi, where he scored an unbeaten 141 against South Africa, playing a crucial role in India's qualification for the finals of the 2000 edition. Another significant inning was his 117 not out against England in Colombo. With a commendable total of 665 runs at an average of 73.88, Ganguly ranks fifth among the tournament's leading run-scorers.
