Hesson: New Zealand May Alter Game Plan to Handle Chakaravarthy in Final vs India

Team India is set to compete against New Zealand in the crucial Champions Trophy final on Sunday. This encounter marks their second clash in the tournament; previously, Rohit Sharma's team secured a victory over the Kiwis by 40 runs in their Group A match, which allowed India to claim the top position in the standings.

Throughout the tournament, India has not won a single toss; in fact, Rohit has lost the toss in each of India's last 14 One Day Internationals. However, former New Zealand coach Mike Hesson asserts that this will not be a significant issue on Sunday.

Hesson contends that the absence of dew in Dubai diminishes the importance of the toss, while also recognizing India's impressive performance throughout the tournament.

"I initially expected there to be more dew at this venue during this time of year. Fortunately, that has not been the case. As a result, the toss is not a major consideration, which is a positive aspect," Hesson stated, as reported by Cricbuzz.

"As you approach a Champions Trophy final, the outcome of the toss is not a primary concern, and for Indian supporters, the fact that Rohit Sharma has lost 14 consecutive tosses is not something to lose sleep over."

Chakaravarthy the key factor

The Indian spinner made his tournament debut against New Zealand, a strategic choice that proved beneficial as he achieved an impressive five-wicket haul. Varun Chakaravarthy was subsequently awarded the player of the match title and maintained his exceptional form in the semi-final against Australia, where he recorded figures of 2/49 over ten overs.

Hesson noted that Chakaravarthy's presence would compel the New Zealand team to make a strategic decision during the toss.

"From a tactical standpoint, I believe New Zealand will prefer to bat first at the toss, aiming to replicate their approach against South Africa in the semi-final. This is largely due to the influence of Varun Chakaravarthy," Hesson remarked.

India is set to pursue their second consecutive ICC white-ball title on Sunday, following their T20 World Cup triumph last year, also achieved under the leadership of Rohit Sharma.
