Pakistan's Champions Trophy 2025 journey has taken a turn for the worse following their initial defeat to New Zealand, which was further exacerbated by an injury setback. Fakhar Zaman, a key player in their batting lineup, sustained an injury early in the match and has been ruled out for the remainder of the tournament.

Fakhar sustained the injury on just the second ball of the match, which forced him to leave the field for the majority of New Zealand's innings. Consequently, he was unable to open the batting and came in at No. 3 after Mohammad Rizwan's dismissal.

Despite showing signs of discomfort, Fakhar persevered through the pain in an effort to stabilize the innings. However, his difficulties were evident as he struggled to rotate the strike, ultimately scoring 24 runs off 41 balls before being dismissed.

Upon his dismissal, Fakhar was overwhelmed with emotion. As he walked off the field, he broke down in tears, unable to contain his disappointment. Shaheen Afridi attempted to offer comfort, but the left-handed batsman was inconsolable, acutely aware that this tournament could have been a pivotal moment in his career.

Imam-ul-Haq has been appointed as Fakhar’s substitute.

After conducting medical evaluations, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced that Fakhar’s injury would preclude him from participating further in the tournament. Left-handed batsman Imam-ul-Haq has been included in the squad as his replacement.

Fakhar’s return to the national team was already marked by drama—he was reinstated after being omitted from tours to South Africa and Australia, reportedly due to his outspoken support for Babar Azam following the latter's exclusion from the Test squad.

Pakistan is now confronted with a crucial match against India at the Dubai International Stadium. A defeat would jeopardize their chances of qualification, leaving them reliant on a complicated series of outcomes.
