Hasan Ali Sparks Debate: PSL Over IPL Despite Pakistan’s Flop Show

7 days ago | 5 Views

This year, the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and the Indian Premier League (IPL) are competing directly, and Hasan Ali has made a striking assertion regarding the viewership of both leagues. The Pakistani fast bowler is of the opinion that if the PSL elevates its cricketing standards, fans may be inclined to abandon the IPL in favor of Pakistan's premier T20 competition.

Typically scheduled for February and March, the PSL has been moved to an April-May timeframe this season due to the 2025 Champions Trophy being hosted in Pakistan, placing it in direct rivalry with the IPL. Despite the IPL's significant popularity and financial strength, Hasan is optimistic that the PSL can establish its own identity, provided the performances meet expectations.

“Viewers are drawn to tournaments that offer high-quality cricket and entertainment. If we perform well in the PSL, fans will choose to watch us over the IPL,” Hasan stated during a press conference ahead of the PSL 10 opener, as reported by Geo News.

This season, Hasan will play for the Karachi Kings. He recognizes that Pakistan's recent international challenges have influenced the perception of the league, a situation he hopes will improve with time and enhanced results.

“When the national team struggles, it affects franchise leagues like the PSL,” he acknowledged. “However, when Pakistan excels, the PSL also benefits.”

Pakistan's poor performances

Pakistan's recent performances on the international stage have been disappointing. Their attempt to defend the Champions Trophy title ended prematurely in the group stage, marked by consecutive losses to New Zealand and India. Following this, a white-ball series in New Zealand resulted in a 4-1 defeat in T20Is and a 3-0 sweep in ODIs, despite the return of key players such as Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan for the one-day matches.

Nevertheless, Hasan remains optimistic about the future.

“The current outcomes are not favorable, but we have new talent in the team and in the management that require time to adjust. The players are aware of their mistakes and the areas that need improvement,” he stated, expressing confidence in the revamped team structure.
