Harshit Rana Makes History: First Indian with Three Wickets on Debut Across Formats

India's inaugural match of the ODI series against England in Nagpur marked the debut of two young players, with pacer Harshit Rana receiving his cap from Mohammed Shami. Harshit shared the new ball with Shami during the match.

Although Harshit faced some challenges, particularly conceding 26 runs in one over to Phil Salt during his third over, he ultimately claimed the vital wickets of Ben Duckett, Harry Brook, and Liam Livingstone. He concluded his debut with impressive figures of 3/53 after 7 overs, as England was dismissed for 248 following Jos Buttler's decision to bat first.

During the innings break, Harshit reflected on his commendable performance, stating that his primary motivation was to maintain a consistent bowling length. He noted, "Initially, they attacked my bowling, but I didn’t deviate from my length, and eventually, I was rewarded for it."

In the past three months, Harshit has made his debut in all three formats and has become the first Indian bowler to achieve three wickets on debut in each format. He secured his first two wickets in the same over late in the powerplay, thereby shifting the momentum in favor of his team.

Harshit reveals plan after expensive over

In discussing his recovery from the challenges posed by the Salt onslaught, Harshit attributed his success to his steadfastness and the strategic plan he developed in collaboration with captain Rohit Sharma, which focused on maximizing his ability to generate pace and bounce.

"They were primarily seeking opportunities for scoring. Their best chance to attack came when they had some room to manoeuvre," the 23-year-old elaborated. "Thus, Rohit Bhaiya and I agreed that I should maintain a tight line and length. That was my objective."

“It is a dream come true, but I have put in significant effort to reach this point, so it feels as though I am finally enjoying the fruits of my labour,” remarked Harshit, who made his T20 debut in Mumbai during the fifth and final T20I against England last week, achieving a remarkable three-wicket haul.

As India prepared to chase a target of 249, they encountered early setbacks, losing both Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma following a formidable opening spell from Saqib Mahmood and Jofra Archer. Reflecting on the pitch conditions, Harshit noted, “It is somewhat of a double-paced surface. Some deliveries unexpectedly rise, while others tend to stay low.”

In addition to Harshit, Ravindra Jadeja was instrumental in the bowling attack, claiming three wickets, while Mohammed Shami, Axar Patel, and Kuldeep Yadav each contributed with one wicket apiece.
