Harry Brook Succeeds Jos Buttler as England’s White-Ball Captain After Champions Trophy Exit
4 days ago | 5 Views
Harry Brook has been appointed as the new captain for England's white-ball teams. He takes over from Jos Buttler, who stepped down after England faced consecutive losses in the Champions Trophy against Australia and Afghanistan, which resulted in their exit from the tournament without reaching the semi-finals.
Buttler announced his resignation just before England's final match in the Champions Trophy 2025 against South Africa.
On Monday, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) officially announced Brook's new role as captain. Previously, he withdrew from the IPL 2025 season due to concerns about his workload, which led to a two-year ban from the league.
At 26, Brook has been an essential player in England’s white-ball squad since his debut in January 2022. He currently holds the second spot in the ICC world batting rankings for Test cricket. Over the past year, he has served as vice-captain in both ODI and T20I formats.
Brook stepped up to lead England in the ODI series against Australia last September when Buttler was unavailable. He has proven his leadership skills by captaining England during the 2018 ICC Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand.
In his career, Brook has played 26 ODIs, amassing 816 runs with an average of 34.00, including a top score of 110. He has also participated in 44 T20I matches and was part of the squad that clinched the ICC T20 World Cup in 2022.
It’s a true privilege for me
Harry Brook expressed his excitement in an official statement from the ECB, sharing how honored he feels to take on the role of England's captain and his eagerness to hit the field.
“It’s a huge privilege to be appointed as England’s white-ball captain. Since I was a kid playing cricket in Burley, Wharfedale, I’ve always dreamed of representing Yorkshire, playing for England, and hopefully leading the team one day. Being given this opportunity means a lot to me,” Brook stated.
He went on to express gratitude towards his family and coaches for their unwavering support. “Their faith in me has been crucial, and I wouldn’t be here without them. There’s so much talent in this country, and I’m eager to get started, push us forward, and aim for victories in series, World Cups, and major tournaments. I can’t wait to dive in and give it my all,” he added.
There were earlier discussions about Ben Stokes potentially leading the ODI team, while Joe Root has stepped back from the captaincy, stating he’s done his time in that role.
Recently, England's performance in white-ball cricket has been disappointing. The team was eliminated in the group stage of the 2023 ODI World Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy, and they also lost to India in the semi-finals of the 2024 T20 World Cup.
