Harry Brook Criticized for Blaming Kolkata's Smog in England's Loss to Varun Chakaravarthy

England's vice-captain, Harry Brook, has found himself in controversy following his remarks regarding the smog in Kolkata, which he attributed as a significant factor in the difficulties faced by English batters in reading the spinners during the first T20I against India at Eden Gardens. The right-handed batsman expressed that the hazy conditions hindered their ability to see the ball clearly, particularly when facing Varun Chakravarthy.
Chakravarthy delivered a pivotal performance, claiming the wickets of Jos Buttler, Liam Livingstone, and Brook, finishing with impressive figures of 3 for 33, contributing to India's convincing seven-wicket win over England in the opening match of the five-match T20I series.
"Chakravarthy is an exceptionally skilled bowler," Brook stated in an interview with the Daily Telegraph. "However, the smog that evening made it significantly more challenging to pick the ball. I hope the air quality improves here so we can see the ball more clearly."
He further remarked, "Facing spin in T20 cricket is arguably the most difficult aspect of the game, especially since I often get dismissed while attempting to hit aggressively."
Brook's comments were met with disapproval from Indian fans, who criticized him for his remarks. Some fans pointed out the irony of his situation, noting that he was selected by the Delhi Capitals for this season's IPL, a city recognized for its high pollution levels. Others highlighted the inconsistency in his argument, as India's Abhishek Sharma managed to score 74 runs off 39 balls under the same conditions, while players like Sanju Samson exhibited no difficulties in sighting the ball.
Brook indicated that he is developing his strategy to counteract spin bowling.
"I may need to temper my approach somewhat, but we shall see. I believe I have a method; it is simply a matter of executing it consistently and more frequently. As I bat in the middle order, the initial deliveries I face are typically off-spin."
Brook achieved an IPL century a couple of seasons ago while playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad against Chakravarthy's Kolkata Knight Riders.
Having been thoroughly perplexed by the wrist spinner, Brook expressed a desire to revisit his moment of triumph against a familiar opponent.
"I intended to watch it on my way to Friday's practice session, but my phone malfunctioned, so I will review it a bit later," he remarked.
