Haris Rauf Makes Comeback; Babar Azam Takes on New Role in Rizwan's Squad: Pakistan's Expected XI Against New Zealand in Champions Trophy

Pakistan and New Zealand maintain a compelling relationship in One Day Internationals (ODIs). With an ICC event returning to Pakistan for the first time since the 1996 World Cup, and the Champions Trophy striving to emphasize the significance of 50-over cricket, this rivalry is far from inconsequential. To substantiate this, let us consider some statistics.

Since 2019, no team has participated in more ODIs in Pakistan than New Zealand, with a total of 11 matches played. The Kiwis' recent performance in the tri-series involving Pakistan and South Africa serves as a testament to their capabilities in these conditions. Equally noteworthy is the historical context of the encounters between these two teams in ICC ODI tournaments.

In the last two World Cup editions, New Zealand edged out Pakistan to secure a place in the semi-finals, despite Pakistan having triumphed over New Zealand in their group-stage matches during both tournaments.

However, Pakistan, now led by captain Mohammad Rizwan, is invigorated by the prospect of hosting an ICC event on home soil after nearly three decades. Although they faced defeats against New Zealand earlier this month, they should not be underestimated, particularly with the chance to field their strongest lineup.

On the eve of the Champions Trophy opener, Rizwan announced that fast bowler Haris Rauf is expected to return to the playing XI for the match against New Zealand. Rauf had sustained a muscle strain during the opening match of the tri-series against New Zealand on February 8 and was unable to participate in the remainder of the tournament. Rizwan noted that Rauf has resumed bowling and appears to be in good form.

"Haris bowled 6-8 overs a couple of days ago and has also bowled significantly yesterday," Rizwan stated at the captain's press conference prior to the tournament. "He is bowling with full rhythm today as well. He is also working out in the gym and has reported no pain. We believe he is fully fit."

Rauf's return is crucial for enhancing Pakistan's prospects in the Champions Trophy. Following the initial spell from Shaheen Afridi and Naseem Shah, Rauf is expected to deliver key breakthroughs during the middle overs, utilizing his express pace and ability to generate bounce.

In contrast to other teams, Pakistan has a somewhat limited spin attack. Abrar Ahmed is anticipated to serve as the sole specialist spinner, with Salman Agha assisting him in this role.

Attention will also be directed towards Babar Azam, who has not scored a century in his last 21 matches. He is set to open the batting for the first time in an ICC 50-over tournament.
