Hardik Pandya Surprises Ashwani Kumar with Generous Reward After IPL Debut

Mumbai Indians' exceptional scouting team has unveiled yet another remarkable talent in 23-year-old Ashwani Kumar. The left-arm fast bowler made a stunning debut in the IPL, achieving figures of 4/24 in a Player of the Match performance against Kolkata Knight Riders at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Monday. The significance of this achievement is heightened by the notable batsmen he dismissed, including Ajinkya Rahane, Rinku Singh, Manish Pandey, and Andre Russell—four of KKR's most prominent batting figures. Supporting Ashwani were Deepak Chahar, who took 2/19, and Trent Boult with 1/23, but it was the young pacer who shone brightest as MI secured their first victory of IPL 2025, defeating KKR by eight wickets.
Following the match, Ashwani received the MI badge from captain Hardik Pandya, who had placed his trust in the young bowler. While Vignesh Puthur had made an impact in the opening game, Ashwani took center stage against KKR. Hailing from a modest background, his journey of perseverance and determination has been well-documented. Expressing his appreciation for his captain, whose encouragement played a crucial role in his performance, Kumar was met with a surprise in the Mumbai Indians' dressing room.
"Ashwani demonstrated the true essence of playing for the MI badge. Congratulations! Prior to the huddle, we discussed the importance of intensity, ruthlessness, and what this MI badge signifies. He exemplified all of that, and we are incredibly proud of you. Keep it up," Hardik remarked, giving Ashwani an encouraging pat on the chest.
In response, Ashwani pledged to continue giving his best in future matches. "First and foremost, I am extremely thankful for the chance to play alongside such outstanding players. I will strive to give my all in the upcoming games and contribute to the team's success," he stated, prompting a round of applause from his teammates.
Ryan Rickelton rewarded too
Ryan Rickelton also received recognition. While Ashwani made a significant impact for MI with his bowling, it was Ryan Rickelton who shone with the bat. Opening the innings alongside Rohit Sharma, Rickelton remained not out at 62 runs off 41 deliveries, including 4 fours and 5 sixes, despite Sharma's dismissal for just 13 runs, continuing his struggle for form. Like Ashwani, Rickelton was honored with a badge from captain Suryakumar Yadav.
"Everyone thinks batting at the Wankhede is straightforward, but it’s not. Rahul witnessed my aspirations in Cape Town, and I’m genuinely pleased to contribute to the team. I’m obviously thrilled to put runs on the board and secure two points for MI. As we say, we look ahead and focus on what’s next," he remarked.
