The 2024 season was one that Mumbai Indians would prefer to forget. The team faced significant controversy even before the season commenced, following the unexpected appointment of Hardik Pandya as captain, replacing Rohit Sharma. This decision incited a considerable backlash among MI supporters, and the team struggled to recover from the ensuing turmoil, ultimately finishing at the bottom of the standings with only four victories in 14 matches—marking one of their poorest performances in history.

Compounding the team's difficulties, Hardik was met with persistent boos from the home crowd at Wankhede Stadium, a clear indication of their dissatisfaction with Rohit’s sudden ousting. However, since that disappointing IPL season, Hardik's fortunes have dramatically improved.

The all-rounder played a crucial role in India's impressive T20 World Cup victory shortly after the IPL season, gradually regaining the support of fans who had previously criticized him. Earlier this month, he further solidified his comeback narrative with exceptional performances during India’s successful Champions Trophy campaign.

As he approaches IPL 2025, Hardik has an opportunity to fully redeem himself with the Mumbai Indians. In anticipation of the upcoming season, he conveyed a message to the fans who are expected to rally behind the franchise. During a recent press conference, Hardik subtly encouraged the supporters to cheer for him whenever he takes the field.

"I concur with the sentiments expressed by fans regarding Hardik's significance to the team," stated the all-rounder.

"When I step onto the field to bat, I ask for your support; cheer for me when I hit a six, and cheer for me during the toss. I wish to see no colours other than ours at the Wankhede Stadium. That is my only request."

Hardik also shared his reflections on his journey since the previous year's IPL, expressing confidence in his ability to make a comeback.

"It has been a remarkable experience. The journey has been challenging, yet entertaining. I have always viewed myself as a key player for the team. When I effectively utilize my all-around abilities, it invariably benefits the team," remarked the MI captain.

Mumbai Indians' highly anticipated opener

The Mumbai Indians will face a formidable challenge in their IPL 2025 opener, as they go up against their long-standing rivals, the Chennai Super Kings, in a highly anticipated away match in Chennai on March 23.

Both teams experienced disappointing seasons in 2024, with CSK also missing out on a playoff berth, and they will be striving for a significantly better performance this year.
