Harbhajan Singh Sparks Outrage Over Racist Remark About Jofra Archer, Fans Call for IPL Ban
3 days ago | 5 Views
On Sunday, India's renowned spinner Harbhajan Singh ignited a controversy over racism by making a contentious comparison between England fast bowler Jofra Archer and a "black taxi." This remark was made during his commentary for the IPL 2025 match featuring the Rajasthan Royals (RR) and the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).
The incident occurred in the 18th over of the first innings while Archer was bowling to SRH players Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen. Harbhajan's provocative comment followed consecutive boundaries hit by the South African batsman against Archer on the second and third deliveries of the over.
“London's black taxi meter runs fast, and here too, Archer's meter has been running high,” Harbhajan stated during the broadcast. This on-air comment provoked outrage among fans on social media, leading many to demand his immediate removal from the IPL 2025 commentary team.
An expensive outing for Archer in Hyderabad
The right-arm fast bowler had a costly debut in IPL 2025, allowing 76 runs without taking any wickets during the match against Hyderabad. His bowling performance marked the highest number of runs conceded in IPL history, surpassing Mohit Sharma's previous record of 0/73 for the Gujarat Titans against the Delhi Capitals last year.
In contrast, it was a historic day for the Sunrisers, who achieved their fourth total exceeding 250 runs in T20 cricket, setting a new record for the most by any team, outpacing India and Surrey. However, they fell short of breaking their own IPL record for the highest team total by a mere two runs, finishing with 286 for six against Rajasthan. Their previous record was 287/3 against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru last year. Ishan Kishan was instrumental for the Sunrisers, scoring his first IPL century in just 45 balls.
The Sunrisers Hyderabad triumphed over Rajasthan by 44 runs, marking a successful start to their campaign.
