Harbhajan Singh Questions Rohit Sharma’s 2027 World Cup Future: ‘That’s Too Far…’

6 days ago | 5 Views

Veteran spinner Harbhajan Singh expressed uncertainty regarding Rohit Sharma's participation in the 2027 World Cup for India. However, he noted that if Rohit diligently focuses on his fitness, he could secure a spot on the team. Recently, Rohit captained India to victory in the Champions Trophy in Dubai, marking the second ICC title for the nation within a year. The dynamic opener has been at the forefront of the team in the 50-over format, delivering a crucial performance in the Champions Trophy final.

Under Rohit's leadership, the Indian team has embraced a bold batting strategy, with openers tasked with providing an explosive start to set the tone for the innings. Although he has announced his retirement from T20 internationals, Rohit made it clear after the Champions Trophy victory that he has no intention of stepping away from the 50-over format in the near future.

Rohit guided the Indian squad to the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup, yet the coveted trophy remains an elusive goal for him.

Harbhajan believes that with two and a half years remaining until the 2027 World Cup, it is still a considerable distance away. He emphasized that Rohit's fitness and determination will be crucial for his continued participation.

"I think if there is anything left for him to achieve, it is the 50-over World Cup. He would likely want to win it, but with two and a half years to go, that is quite a long time. He will need to assess his fitness and motivation," Harbhajan stated to ESPNcrincinfo.

Rohit Sharma keeping his options open

The experienced spinner remarked that he must exert considerable effort to secure a place in the 2027 World Cup, drawing a parallel to another seasoned player, Virat Kohli.

"If he still possesses the necessary skills, he will need to put in the hard work, and if he does, he will be able to play. The same applies to Virat Kohli," he stated.

In a related development, following the victory in the CT 2025, Rohit expressed that he is considering all possibilities for his future in cricket and mentioned that he cannot definitively commit to participating in the 2027 World Cup.

"It is quite challenging to make a statement about that at this moment. However, I am keeping all my options open. I want to assess my performance as I continue to play. Currently, I am performing exceptionally well and enjoying my contributions to the team, which is reciprocated by my teammates. I cannot definitively predict my involvement in 2027, as it is still a long way off, but I am keeping all avenues available," Rohit conveyed, as reported by ICC.
