Veteran Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh has called for significant improvement from KL Rahul in a particular area following his impressive 84-run performance against Australia in the third Test match. Rahul emerged as the leading batsman for India in the first innings, demonstrating resilience as wickets fell around him. Although he was dropped early on Day 4 by Steve Smith at slip, he capitalized on this opportunity to deliver a commendable innings before Nathan Lyon curtailed his pursuit of a century.
Harbhajan, who is currently providing commentary for the series, praised Rahul's abilities but emphasized the need for him to elevate his batting average, which currently stands at 34.54.
"Given his talent, this improvement is certainly achievable. He is a genuine batsman with excellent technique suited for Test cricket. He understands how to leave the ball and possesses a full range of shots. He handles both spin and pace effectively, including short deliveries. However, I would like to see his average rise by 20-25 points," Harbhajan stated during an interview with Star Sports.
The Indian opener has recorded a couple of half-centuries in this series and has appeared to be the most technically proficient Indian batsman on the challenging Australian pitches.
Harbhajan further commended Rahul's potential, asserting that his average should exceed 50, but noted that fluctuations in his career and several injuries have hindered his progress.
"Considering his caliber and the type of player he is, his average should ideally be between 50 and 55. There is substantial room for improvement moving forward. His career has seen many ups and downs, and he has faced challenges with injuries that have kept him out of the game for extended periods," Harbhajan remarked.

The experienced spinner has recommended that the Indian management maintain Rahul's position at the top of the batting order.
"I trust that he is now less prone to injuries and can participate in consistent matches. This position suits him well. He opens the innings and enjoys facing deliveries. He is capable of playing lengthy innings. We anticipate that his performance will continue to improve, and in five years' time, it would be gratifying to discuss KL Rahul's career if his average stands between 50 and 55," he remarked.
