Former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh has expressed his support for his longtime teammate and former captain Rohit Sharma, who recently faced criticism from Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed, who labelled him “fat for a sportsperson” and referred to him as “the most unimpressive captain India has ever had.” Harbhajan remarked that it is disheartening when individuals lacking an understanding of the sport offer unsolicited opinions.

“The remarks regarding @ImRo45's fitness were regrettable and unnecessary. He is an exceptional player and a remarkable leader who has significantly contributed to Indian cricket. Athletes are human beings with feelings and emotions. It is indeed painful when those with no knowledge of the game pass judgment. We must respect the sport and the players,” Harbhajan stated in his post on X.

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia previously expressed support for Rohit, stating, "It is regrettable that such remarks originate from an individual in a position of responsibility towards our captain, especially at a time when India is competing in an ICC tournament and preparing for the semi-final." His comments were made to ANI. Additionally, Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya criticized Mohamed's remarks, labelling them as "outright pathetic."

What Shama Mohamed had said

Mohamed expressed in the post that Rohit is the "least impressive captain India has ever had." She remarked, "Rohit Sharma is overweight for an athlete! He needs to shed some pounds! Additionally, he is undoubtedly the least impressive captain India has ever had!"

In a subsequent post, she drew comparisons between Sharma and former captains of the Indian cricket team, labelling him as a “mediocre” player and leader. She questioned, “What distinguishes him as world-class when juxtaposed with his predecessors? He is an average captain and an average player who merely stumbled into the role of captain for India.”
