Hans Niemann recently faced defeat against GM Daniil Dubov in an 18-game blitz match held in Moscow. The Russian grandmaster emerged victorious with a score of 9.5 to 8.5, and as part of the agreement, Niemann was required to respond to a single question using a lie-detector polygraph test.

This match followed their earlier controversy at the 2024 World Blitz Championship, during which Dubov failed to appear for their scheduled game, resulting in a default win for Niemann.

Hans Niemann backs out of lie-detector test

In a recent YouTube discussion, the American Grandmaster expressed his refusal to undergo a lie detector test, citing a lack of respect from his opponent.

“I have no desire to grant someone like Dubov, who has acted immaturely, the privilege of questioning me with a lie detector, which is nothing more than pseudoscience, especially when I have nothing to prove,” he stated.

“Despite the numerous challenges I have faced, I have consistently delivered strong performances. I have nothing further to demonstrate; the responsibility lies with them to provide evidence. These individuals are reprehensible, having attempted to ruin the life of a 19-year-old due to a personal and twisted vendetta.”

Niemann also accused Dubov of speaking to him and causing distractions during their match, and subsequently refusing to shake hands. “The level of disrespect exhibited by the chess community and its players is truly astonishing,” he remarked.

Additionally, Niemann disclosed that Dubov proposed the lie detector test to take place in Dubai, with the expectation that Niemann would cover the associated costs. “I refuse to finance an entire trip and accommodate Dubov in a nice hotel just for this,” Niemann asserted.

In the meantime, Dubov has already indicated in an interview with a Russian news outlet that he intends to ask Niemann whether he has cheated over the board in the past five years.

Niemann is also scheduled to compete in the upcoming Paris Freestyle Grand Slam event, where he will face prominent players such as Magnus Carlsen and D Gukesh. Furthermore, he is set to feature in a Netflix documentary alongside Magnus Carlsen, where they will discuss their controversial cheating scandal. The documentary is expected to be released in April.
