Chess enthusiasts globally are preparing for D Gukesh’s classic chess encounter with Magnus Carlsen. The current World Champion will challenge Carlsen at the upcoming Norway Chess 2025, which is set to occur from May 26 to June 6. Prior to the tournament, Viswanathan Anand shared his enthusiasm regarding Gukesh’s imminent clash with Carlsen.

During a discussion organized by the Sports Journalists Association of Mumbai, Anand remarked, “I anticipate a very thrilling contest. ”

‘Both Gukesh and Arjun will…’: Viswanathan Anand

“Both Gukesh and Arjun will possess plenty of motivation and the resolve to challenge Magnus. However, Magnus is extremely motivated by our young players, if I may still refer to them in that way.

“He is immensely driven by the challenge. I mean I’ve observed him in several tournaments, whether it’s Kolkata or the World Rapid Blitz. He eagerly anticipates these encounters, hence we have an ideal situation. ”

Four Indian Grandmasters will compete in Norway: Gukesh, Arjun Erigaisi, Vaishali Rameshbabu, and Koneru Humpy. Commenting on their participation, Anand stated, “Certainly on the men’s side, Indian chess is at its strongest ever, even more so clearly due to the depth we possess. But it’s wonderful that Humpy is still competing with such success and that she’ll be joined by Vaishali too. ”

In addition to Gukesh, Arjun, and Carlsen, the men’s Norway Chess field includes Fabiano Caruana, Hikaru Nakamura, and Wei Yi. Meanwhile, the women’s lineup features Ju Wenjun, Lei Tingjie, Humpy, Anna Muzychuk, Vaishali, and Sarasadat Khademalsharieh.

The tournament format will incorporate the Armageddon tiebreak system. If a classical game ends in a tie, players will engage in an Armageddon game to determine the victor. A confessional booth will also be included.

Speaking about these innovations, Anand expressed, “If you have too many per tournament, it becomes distracting and there’s kind of an overload. Armageddon is beneficial because it provides something to anticipate at the conclusion of a game in case it ends in a draw. ”

“I’m not certain we have discovered the ideal value for an Armageddon game. It used to be what, 2-1 and then it’s slightly more; we’re still adjusting the number. There may be a formula that will give the Armageddon a bit more significance toward the overall score,” he continued.
