As SunRisers Hyderabad prepared to face Punjab Kings in the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL), batter Abhishek Sharma had accumulated only 51 runs over five innings. However, he dramatically turned his performance around by scoring 141 runs off just 55 balls, leading Pat Cummins and his team to successfully chase down a target of 246 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Saturday. Following the victory against Shreyas Iyer's Punjab Kings, Abhishek acknowledged the support of his mentor, Yuvraj Singh, and India's T20I captain, Suryakumar Yadav, who stood by him during his challenging times.

In his remarkable innings of 141, Abhishek Sharma set multiple records. He achieved the highest score by an SRH player, surpassing the previous record held by former captain David Warner. Additionally, he recorded the highest score by an Indian player in IPL history and now holds the third-highest individual score in the tournament, trailing only Chris Gayle and Brendon McCullum.

This outstanding performance enabled SunRisers Hyderabad to chase down 246 runs with eight wickets remaining and nine balls to spare.

"Special thanks to Yuvraj Paaji, as I have been in communication with him, and I must also acknowledge Mr. Suryakumar Yadav, who has been supportive and believed that my breakthrough was imminent, so I appreciate his guidance," Abhishek Sharma stated during the post-match presentation.

"I also want to highlight the contributions of the team and our captain, Pat Cummins. The atmosphere within the team was straightforward. Despite our recent struggles, I felt a strong conviction that I needed to perform like this to help us return to winning ways. I had a conversation with Travis, and it turned out to be a memorable day for both of us," he added.

Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head go hell for leather

Abhishek Sharma (141) and Travis Head (66) significantly undermined the Punjab Kings' efforts by forming a formidable partnership of 171 runs for the opening wicket while pursuing a target of 246. The Punjab bowlers, including Arshdeep Singh, Yuzvendra Chahal, Yash Thakur, and Glenn Maxwell, struggled to counter the aggressive batting, allowing SunRisers to comfortably achieve the target.

"We didn't have any specific discussions; it was simply our natural style of play. We aimed to express ourselves from the very first ball, which has been our goal since the initial game. Fortunately, that day showcased a remarkable innings from both myself and Travis, and our partnership really motivated me," Abhishek stated.

Abhishek Sharma's parents were seen at the match against the Punjab Kings, and following the victory, the left-handed batsman expressed his belief in their good luck charm for Pat Cummins and the team.

"I have been eagerly anticipating their presence, and the entire team felt the same. We were all looking forward to my parents and family being here because they are considered very fortunate for SRH and the Orange Army. We were thrilled to have them with us, and I sincerely thank them for that," Abhishek remarked.

With this victory over the Punjab Kings, SunRisers Hyderabad climbed to the eighth position in the points table. The 2016 champions now have 4 points from 6 matches and will face the Mumbai Indians next on Thursday, April 17.
