Glenn Phillips' Gravity-Defying Catch Leaves Shubman Gill Stunned in Champions Trophy Final
1 month ago | 5 Views
New Zealand needed a bit of Glenn Phillips' brilliance to get back into the ICC Men's Champions Trophy final against India at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill were cruising in their chase of 252, having put together over 100 runs for the first wicket. But then Phillips, who has been the standout fielder in the tournament, pulled off an incredible catch to give the Kiwis their first breakthrough and send Gill packing.
On the fourth ball of the 19th over, Glenn Phillips soared through the air to snatch the ball, leaving Shubman Gill stunned. Gill had just driven a well-flighted delivery from Mitchell Santner towards cover.
The ball looked like it was heading for the boundary, but Phillips made an amazing leap, reaching out with one hand to grab it out of nowhere. As a result, Shubman Gill had to walk back after scoring 31 runs off 50 balls.

Phillips was over the moon and really proud of his own performance. This marks the third jaw-dropping catch he's made in the 2025 Champions Trophy. Earlier, he pulled off some amazing catches, getting rid of Pakistan's Mohammad Rizwan and India's Virat Kohli.
This incredible catch broke India's 105-run opening partnership and got the Kiwis back in the game.
One leads to another
In the next over, Michael Bracewell took down India's No.3, Virat Kohli, putting New Zealand right back in the game. Kohli misjudged the ball's path and got struck on the pads.
The umpire didn’t hesitate to raise his finger. After a quick chat with Rohit, Kohli opted for a review. But the replays confirmed the umpire's decision, and Kohli had to head back to the pavilion.
The former Indian captain managed just two balls, scoring only one run. He needed 46 runs in the final to become the all-time leading run-scorer in the Champions Trophy. If he had hit 55 runs, he would have surpassed Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara to become the second-highest run-scorer in ODIs.
Earlier, New Zealand set a target of 251/7 in their 50 overs after choosing to bat first. Daryl Mitchell was the standout performer for the Kiwis, while Varun Chakaravarthy and Kuldeep Yadav each took two wickets for India.
