Glenn Phillips Discusses GT's IPL 2025 Prospects and His Jonty Rhodes Aspirations, Unrelated to Shubman Gill's Captaincy

Glenn Phillips is undoubtedly the premier fielder in world cricket. During the ICC Men's Champions Trophy 2025, the New Zealand all-rounder showcased his extraordinary skills by executing gravity-defying catches that left spectators in awe. Notable players such as Mohammad Rizwan, Virat Kohli, and Shubman Gill witnessed Phillips' exceptional talent as he channeled his inner superhero to dismiss batters with remarkable catches.
Even the legendary Jonty Rhodes acknowledged Phillips' exceptional abilities, affirming that the New Zealand cricketer is currently the finest in the field. Following his stunning performances in the Champions Trophy, where he made several breathtaking catches, Phillips is set to join the Indian Premier League (IPL) to play for the Gujarat Titans, under the captaincy of Shubman Gill.
While Phillips' fielding captured the spotlight during the Champions Trophy, his contributions with both bat and ball should not be overlooked. He provided valuable innings in the middle order, playing a crucial role in New Zealand's journey to the final. The 28-year-old aims to continue his impressive form with the Titans, aspiring to make the 2022 champions a formidable team.
In a recent media interaction prior to the Gujarat Titans' opening IPL 2025 match against the Punjab Kings, Phillips remarked on his advantageous genetics, which he believes enhance his fielding abilities.
Indeed, I believe we are fortunate to possess strong genetics that enhance our agility, providing us with a competitive edge in fielding. Furthermore, our passion and enjoyment for the game of fielding likely distinguish us from those who may not share the same level of enthusiasm, he remarked.
GT secured the IPL title in 2022 under the leadership of Hardik Pandya and finished as runners-up in 2023. However, with the new captain Gill at the helm, the Titans have struggled, ending the last season in eighth place. Nevertheless, Phillips dismissed any concerns regarding Gill's potential pressure, emphasizing that cricket is a collective effort and that the success of a team does not hinge on a single player.
"It’s a team sport. One individual cannot secure victory alone. Therefore, I don’t believe it relates to Shubman or his leadership. T20 cricket is more about which players are in form at the right moments, and the Sunrisers and KKR were in peak form during their matches," Phillips stated.
"The way they performed in the initial two years of the team's journey was remarkable, and they were in great form, which was impressive. I hope we can replicate that this year. I don’t think it has anything to do with Shubman or the pressure he faces. After all, he represents India, and that comes with significant pressure," he concluded.
'Jonty Rhodes set the standard for everyone'
Phillips advocated for greater recognition of fielding, emphasizing that the sport encompasses much more than merely batting and bowling. He expressed gratitude to Jonty Rhodes for acknowledging his fielding skills.
"Seeing that post from Jonty was quite impressive. He is someone I admired during my childhood, and he set a benchmark for all players. I aspire to emulate his legacy, alongside greats like AB de Villiers, Brendon McCullum, and Jadeja, particularly from an Indian viewpoint. There are numerous exceptional fielders, and we are all striving to promote the idea that cricket involves more than just batting and bowling," he remarked.
"Fielding is a crucial aspect of the game and provides great entertainment for spectators. If we can motivate the next generation to contribute more on the field than those before them, then we have succeeded in our mission," he continued.
Phillips possesses a realistic understanding of his role in the game. He recognizes that he cannot fulfill the responsibilities typically assigned to top-order batsmen like Kohli and Gill, so he concentrates on his own approach and adheres to his process.
"For me, it’s about enjoying the game, particularly my passion for bowling. I have always aimed to excel in that area, which fuels my desire to train diligently. Every child dreams of being the best in the world, but I also maintain a realistic perspective," Phillips stated.
"There are players like Virat, Shubman, and Rachin who are truly exceptional. My situation is quite different from theirs in terms of roles. Therefore, I focus on my own responsibilities and processes. Enjoying the game to the fullest is my primary goal. Whether I am selected or not is a separate matter, but maintaining my love for the game is what truly matters," he concluded.
