Sunil Gavaskar, the legendary batsman, pointed out that India's impressive comeback to draw the Gabba Test has reopened the series with two matches still to go. Key contributions from KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, and some determined efforts from tailenders Akash Deep and Jasprit Bumrah helped India avoid the follow-on after their first innings, while rain played its part in ensuring the match ended in a draw.
Australia, led by centuries from Travis Head and Steve Smith, had the upper hand for most of the game, with their fast bowlers causing an early collapse for India. But the rain kept interrupting, ultimately leading to the match finishing without a winner.
Gavaskar noted that while the Indian batsmen might not have been at their peak, they still managed to avoid being all out in 50 overs during the second innings, suggesting that Australia lost their grip on the game as the final day unfolded.
No way, I don’t see India getting bowled out for a second time in this Test match. Our batting hasn’t been the best, and not everyone’s been on top of their game, but I doubt we’d get all out in just 50 overs. Still, you have to admit that with 445 runs on the board, Australia definitely had the upper hand in this match, Gavaskar shared with India Today.
Gavaskar also gave a shoutout to Bumrah for mentoring young Akash Deep, who was making his debut Test appearance in Australia. Their partnership for the 10th wicket really helped India avoid the follow-on.
“What stood out to me was the determination shown by the 10th wicket. Jasprit Bumrah is the kind of player every captain dreams of having—he’s a bowler, a batter, a thinker, and just an all-around team player. Plus, he was there to guide Akash Deep too,” he added.
KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja's determination is a good sign for the team.
Gavaskar mentioned that the way Rahul and Jadeja fought back will definitely lift India's spirits for the last two Tests.
"The determination displayed by KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja is a positive sign for the upcoming matches. Keep in mind, India faced a quick defeat in Adelaide. If they hadn't performed well here, the next Tests could have slipped away too," Gavaskar noted.
