The ongoing IPL 2025 has seen a significant number of fines, with eight players facing disciplinary action. The infractions include slow over-rates and violations of the IPL code of conduct. Five captains—Shreyas Iyer, Hardik Pandya, Riyan Parag, Axar Patel, Rishabh Pant, and Sanju Samson—have been penalized for failing to complete the required overs in a timely manner, while others have been reprimanded for various disciplinary breaches. Notably, Lucknow Super Giants' young player, Digvesh Singh Rathi, has already incurred fines on multiple occasions. His unique notebook-style celebration has drawn the ire of the BCCI twice, yet he appears unrepentant.

Rathi was initially fined 25 percent of his match fee and received a demerit point after he celebrated a wicket by confronting Punjab Kings' batter Priyansh Arya. Subsequently, he faced a 50 percent fine for a similar celebration against Naman Dhir of the Mumbai Indians. While the first infraction was anticipated, former Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar expressed his concerns regarding the second penalty imposed by the BCCI.

In his column for Mid-Day, Gavaskar stated, "Digvesh Rathi of the Lucknow team has faced fines on two occasions and lost two demerit points due to his notebook celebration after taking a wicket. The first incident occurred when he dismissed his Delhi teammate Priyansh Arya, and the fine was justified as he approached the batter leaving for the dugout and performed the celebration right next to him. This not only invaded the batter's personal space but also constituted a send-off, leading to a 25 percent deduction from his match fees. However, during the second incident, he was not in close proximity to the batter, making the subsequent fine surprising. He did not invade the batter's space, and thus, the penalty seemed unwarranted."

Did Digvesh Rathi tone down?

The second penalty has somewhat subdued Rathi's behavior. Although he has not completely abandoned his notebook, the leg-spinner has opted for a revised method—inscribing notes on the grass. Fortunately for both LSG and Rathi, he managed to escape repercussions from the BCCI, as the IPL governing council and the board chose to overlook the incident.

The long-haired Rathi has claimed eight wickets across six matches, achieving a best performance of 2/30 against PBKS. He has secured at least one wicket in every match.
