Gavaskar Points Out Flaws in Rohit & Gill’s Game Ahead of Champions Trophy Final

India has shown a strong presence in the 2025 Champions Trophy; however, they have not fully realized their potential due to several critical deficiencies, according to former captain and batting legend Sunil Gavaskar. While the impressive performances of Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer have bolstered the batting lineup, Gavaskar believes that improved contributions from openers Shubman Gill and captain Rohit Sharma would significantly benefit the team.
“They have not performed to their utmost potential because the openers have not provided the kind of starts that were anticipated. This has been a shortcoming,” Gavaskar stated during an interview with India Today. The opening partnership between Rohit and Gill has exceeded five overs only once throughout the tournament, achieving a stand of 69 runs in the initial nine overs.
Gavaskar also highlighted issues within the bowling department. Although India managed to secure five wickets in the first nine overs of their opening match against Bangladesh, their performance during the first powerplay has not been as effective in subsequent matches. Additionally, the team has frequently allowed substantial partnerships to develop during the middle overs. "With the new ball, it is crucial to take wickets in the first 10 overs. Ideally, you would aim for 2 or 3 wickets, which has not been occurring consistently."
“In the middle overs, we have struggled to take wickets, even when runs have not been abundant. Improving in these areas will enhance our chances of advancing and ultimately winning the final,” Gavaskar concluded.
No need to change bowling combination now
India initially fielded three fast bowlers alongside three spinners. However, in their final group match against New Zealand, Varun Chakravarthy was introduced as a fourth spinner and earned the player of the match award for his outstanding performance. He continued to impress in the subsequent match against Australia, leading Gavaskar to advocate for maintaining this lineup in the final, which will also be contested against New Zealand on Sunday.
"I believe the team should opt for four spinners. There is no reason to alter the strategy at this point. The effectiveness of Chakravarthy and Kuldeep has been clearly demonstrated. Moreover, in limited-overs cricket, wicket-taking deliveries serve as the most effective dot balls across all formats. Their performance has validated this approach, so I see no reason for any changes," Gavaskar stated.
