Lucknow Super Giants bowler Digvesh Rathi found himself in a precarious situation after mimicking a send-off reminiscent of Kesrick Williams upon dismissing Punjab Kings opener Priyash Arya during their IPL 2025 match on Tuesday at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow. His actions not only drew the ire of the umpire but also led to a reprimand from former India captain Sunil Gavaskar.

The incident occurred in the third over of Punjab's innings, as the visitors aimed to chase down a target of 172 runs. Rathi delivered a shorter ball outside off stump, prompting Arya, with whom he had previously played in the inaugural Delhi Premier League last year, to attempt an aggressive shot. However, Arya's footwork was inadequate, resulting in a top edge that was easily caught by Shardul Thakur at mid-on, giving Punjab an early wicket.

As Arya made his way back to the dugout, Rathi approached him and performed a celebration reminiscent of the well-known West Indies bowler Williams. The on-field umpire promptly issued a warning, engaging in a lengthy discussion with Rathi before allowing him to continue with his over.

'We know what Kohli did...'

Gavaskar expressed his disapproval of the incident involving the uncapped Indian player during the commentary. He remarked, "I can appreciate a celebration if a wicket follows a boundary or a six on the previous ball. As a bowler, you have six deliveries. If you bowl five dot balls and take a wicket on the sixth, such a celebration is not justifiable. These actions suggest that you did not anticipate taking a wicket, and now that you have, you seem to be trying to show off."

Another commentator quickly pointed out that Williams had previously exhibited similar behavior towards Virat Kohli during a series against India in 2017. Gavaskar promptly responded, "We all remember Kohli's reaction after that. He hit him for boundary after boundary after boundary...(laughs)."

In light of his actions, which attracted the attention of the umpire, Rathi may face disciplinary measures from the BCCI for violating the IPL Code of Conduct. The match referee is expected to investigate the situation following the conclusion of the match.
