Gavaskar Compares Konstas' Behavior to Young Kohli Amid Bumrah Altercation

The confrontation between Jasprit Bumrah and Sam Konstas has emerged as a significant topic of discussion following Day 1 of the ongoing fifth and final Test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024. During the final over at the SCG on Friday, a verbal exchange occurred between Bumrah and Konstas, culminating in a moment of triumph for the seasoned fast bowler.
As Usman Khawaja prepared to face Bumrah, he delayed the bowler's run-up, prompting Bumrah to express his frustration, recognizing Khawaja's intention to conclude the day's play. Konstas then interjected, leading to a back-and-forth between the two players. Before the situation escalated further, the umpires stepped in, allowing Bumrah to deliver the last ball of the over. Contrary to Konstas's belief that he had rattled Bumrah, the Indian pacer had other intentions, successfully dismissing Khawaja with a catch behind the stumps. Bumrah's celebration was direct and impactful as he charged towards Konstas, locking eyes with him.
This moment was soon followed by Bumrah's teammates joining in the celebration, with Virat Kohli notably sprinting from the slip position to revel in the moment in front of the 19-year-old.
Sunil Gavaskar draws a comparison between Sam Konstas and Virat Kohli
In an interview with India Today, cricket icon Sunil Gavaskar drew parallels between the behaviour of Sam Konstas and the aggressive demeanour exhibited by a young Virat Kohli. However, Gavaskar expressed that Konstas should have refrained from engaging in a confrontation with Jasprit Bumrah.
“It is not merely about batting; it pertains to the dynamics on the field when an individual's conduct provokes reactions. It brings to mind a young Kohli, who was direct and confrontational, eliciting responses from the opposing team. This is precisely what transpired here. Prior to the delivery that led to his dismissal, Sam Konstas made comments to Jasprit Bumrah—remarks that were unwarranted at that moment. Understandably, Bumrah and his teammates reacted, leading to an escalation of tensions,” he stated.
Gavaskar also reflected on Konstas’ previous encounter with Bumrah during his Test debut. “Konstas has emerged as a player who can unsettle the opposition. He surprised everyone in the first innings, and in the second innings, Bumrah effectively countered him by taking his wicket,” he noted.
The 1983 World Cup champion cautioned Konstas, highlighting that even Australian great Shane Watson found his behaviour to be unexpected.
“I believe Konstas may be becoming overly enthusiastic about this new persona. Even Shane Watson, who is familiar with him, has commented that this conduct is surprising, given that Konstas is typically a reserved individual. It appears that his teammates may have encouraged this more aggressive stance, but it is something he must regulate as his reputation develops. Whether in the short or long term, if Konstas continues to be perceived as a provocateur, he will likely become a target for the opposition,” he added.
In response to India's first innings score of 185, Australia concluded the day at 9/1, with Konstas (2*) remaining not out. The young player is anticipated to face the Indian bowlers on Day 2, mirroring his approach from the first innings of the previous match.
