Indian cricket icon Sunil Gavaskar has voiced his confusion and discontent regarding the Rajasthan Royals’ underwhelming display in the current IPL 2025 after their fifth consecutive loss in the season. Following a narrow 11-run defeat against Royal Challengers Bangalore on Thursday, Gavaskar questioned the team's mindset towards the game, particularly given that Rahul Dravid is their head coach.

RR’s defeat to RCB has compounded their difficulties in tight run-chases, which has been a recurring issue throughout their IPL 2025 season. Even with one of India’s most esteemed cricketers in charge, RR has struggled to implement a tactical game plan that would be anticipated under Dravid’s direction.

Gavaskar was frank when addressing the team's deficiencies during the game.

“With Rajasthan Royals, I’m actually referring to the earlier matches where I wasn’t at the venue. I merely observed them. Therefore, you’re not always able to sense what’s truly occurring. But here, I was at the venue, and one could truly observe the type of cricket being played. And with someone like Rahul Dravid as the coach, it was quite perplexing—it was thoughtless cricket,” Gavaskar stated on Star Sports.

“Dravid was always so meticulous in his thinking, and I would’ve imagined that such an approach would’ve influenced some of the Rajasthan batters,” he noted.

The legendary cricketer probed the team’s mentality during critical matches.

“Where is the thought process there? You can’t expect inexperienced players to consistently get it right, but still. . . it’s simply a different type of cricket,” he added, implying that RR’s inability to perform under pressure arises from a more profound issue in their approach rather than individual shortcomings.

RR 8th in the league

The team has repeatedly failed to take advantage of the foundations laid during run chases this season, enduring defeats in the closing overs, including a Super Over loss to Delhi Capitals and a 2-run defeat to Lucknow Super Giants.

Currently positioned 8th in the IPL 2025 points table, RR’s prospects of making it to the playoffs are virtually extinguished with merely two victories out of nine matches. With captain Riyan Parag already indicating that the season may be irreparable, RR will require a significant turnaround to restore some pride, commencing with their forthcoming match against Gujarat Titans on April 29.
