Gavaskar Backs Babar Azam After Intense Scrutiny from Pakistani Icons
1 month ago | 5 Views
Babar Azam's most recent ODI century was recorded against Nepal in August 2023, marking 23 innings since that achievement. During this period, he has managed to score seven half-centuries, yet few have exhibited the fluidity that characterized his earlier performances. The situation is similarly concerning in other formats. His last significant T20I innings occurred against Ireland in May 2024. In his last 26 Test innings, Babar has surpassed the 50-run threshold only twice. The renowned Pakistani cricketer appears to be in a downward trend, which is reflected in the overall performance of the Pakistan team.
The defending champions faced elimination from the Champions Trophy, the first ICC tournament hosted by Pakistan since 1996, within just four days, suffering defeats to New Zealand and India in their group matches. They managed to reach the tri-series final at home, only to be defeated by New Zealand in the final match.
Following Pakistan's exit from the tournament, Babar's form, particularly his scoring rate, came under intense scrutiny. Amidst criticism from prominent figures in Pakistani cricket, legendary Indian batsman Sunil Gavaskar offered his support. In a discussion with former Pakistani cricketer Basit Ali on his YouTube channel, Gavaskar proposed a technical adjustment that could help Babar regain his form. He advised Babar to adjust his wide stance, which would enhance his movement at the crease and improve his perception of the ball's bounce.
Gavaskar gives success mantra to Babar Azam
Gavaskar commented on Babar Azam's technique, stating, "Currently, his stance is too wide. If he narrows the distance between his legs while positioned at the crease, he will experience two significant benefits. First, he will find it easier to move forward and backward. Second, by closing the gap, he will effectively increase his height, which enhances his perception of the bounce, allows him to maintain a more upright posture, and improves his ability to handle the ball. Should he implement this adjustment, his capacity to score runs will likely return, bringing joy not only to the people of Pakistan but to cricket fans around the globe."
Gavaskar, who faced Babar during the T20 World Cup in the USA last year, expressed his admiration for the elegant right-hander's batting technique, which he believes delights cricket enthusiasts worldwide.
"His cover drive brings immense joy. Even in the match against India, observe the flick shot he executed for a boundary through mid-wicket; it was truly remarkable. The entire world yearns to witness such exquisite shots," Gavaskar remarked.
Babar will have one last opportunity to address his critics in Pakistan's final Champions Trophy match against Bangladesh on Thursday, February 27.
