Things aren't looking great in the Indian dressing room, and it's pretty obvious now. The recent loss of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy to Australia, after a decade of dominance, has stirred up a lot of issues, and head coach Gautam Gambhir is under serious scrutiny. He's facing backlash following a series of disappointing Test matches, with India losing consecutive series to New Zealand and Australia.

For the first time, India has missed out on the World Test Championship (WTC) final. Recently, the BCCI's higher-ups had a meeting with Gambhir, selector chairman Ajit Agarkar, and captain Rohit Sharma to discuss the team's poor performance in Australia.

According to a report from PTI, Gambhir's future will be assessed after the Champions Trophy kicks off on February 19. There's also increasing worry about his efforts to eliminate the "superstar culture" within the team.

Since Gambhir took charge, India has lost six out of ten Tests and an ODI series in Sri Lanka.

The loss in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy has also sparked discussions about the futures of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, especially since they struggled with the bat. Rohit only managed 31 runs across three Tests, while Virat scored 190 runs in nine innings.

"If India doesn't perform well in the Champions Trophy, Gambhir's role as head coach could be in jeopardy. His contract goes until the 2027 World Cup, but evaluations are ongoing. Sports are all about results, and so far, Gambhir hasn't delivered any significant outcomes," a BCCI source told PTI.

Gambhir and the players aren't aligned

Gautam Gambhir and some senior players aren't seeing eye to eye on the team's culture, according to a PTI report. The head coach is keen on moving away from the superstar mentality that's been around for a while, but not everyone is on board with this change.

It seems Gambhir wasn't too happy with certain star players making specific requests about hotels and practice schedules during their recent tour in Australia.

"Gambhir is determined to shake off the superstar culture that's lingered for years. Back in 2012, when he was captain of Kolkata Knight Riders, he even benched Brendon McCullum for the IPL final against CSK," a source familiar with Gambhir's approach shared with PTI.

"He’s here to break down that superstar mentality, and that’s what’s ruffled some feathers among the players," the source added.

Ultimately, how Gambhir's time as coach plays out will likely depend on India's performance in the upcoming Champions Trophy, where they'll face off against Pakistan, New Zealand, and Bangladesh.

India kicks off their campaign on February 20 against Bangladesh at the Dubai International Stadium.
