Gautam Gambhir assumed the role of head coach in July 2024; however, the early months of his leadership have not been favorable. Under his guidance, India experienced a defeat in the ODI series against Sri Lanka, marking the first loss in 27 years. Subsequently, the team faced a clean sweep in the three-Test series against New Zealand. To compound the situation, India recently lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy to Australia, ending a decade-long winning streak.

Former Indian wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik has forecasted a challenging period ahead for Gambhir in the coming months, although he emphasizes the necessity of allowing Gambhir some time to adjust.

Since Gambhir's appointment, there have been indications of discontent within the team, and concerns have emerged regarding his relationship with Rohit Sharma.

In an interview with Cricbuzz, Dinesh Karthik remarked, "When it comes to Gautam Gambhir, it is essential to afford him some leniency, as he has taken on this role during a particularly difficult period. Following a successful tenure under Rahul Dravid, stepping into those shoes is no simple task."

It is noteworthy that Gambhir has not yet lost a T20I series; however, the outcomes in ODIs and Tests have been disappointing. The upcoming Champions Trophy represents a significant challenge, with considerable expectations attached.

“He has achieved considerable success in T20 cricket, particularly with a group of young players, and has had a substantial impact on them. However, he has faced considerable difficulties in Test cricket,” Gambhir stated.

“Yes, the series against Bangladesh was a triumph, but since then, the trajectory has been downward for him,” he added.

'Is he happy with the current set of players?'

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma experienced a disappointing series against Australia, with both seasoned players finding it difficult to score runs. Following the defeat, Gautam Gambhir expressed in a press conference that it is imperative for Rohit and Virat to contemplate their future decisions.

In response to this, Dinesh Karthik remarked, "He encourages them to determine what they believe is best for themselves. I think the most significant decision for him to consider is whether he is truly satisfied with his current roster of players."

"Can he exert influence over their decision-making? Are they in sync with his vision? What is his perspective on the ideal composition of the Test team? Do these players align with that vision? If they do, that is excellent. If not, it is essential to identify the most effective path forward. Test cricket has posed considerable challenges for Gautam Gambhir," he further stated.
