In light of ongoing initiatives to improve the performance of India's Test cricket team, a report from the Times of India has highlighted emerging tensions between head coach Gautam Gambhir and bowling coach Morne Morkel during their recent tour of Australia. The report indicates that an incident involving Gambhir and Morkel is currently under investigation by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), necessitating resolution to ensure the team's cohesive operation in the future.

The discord reportedly originated when Morkel arrived late to a training session due to a personal meeting. Gambhir, known for his stringent disciplinary standards, promptly reprimanded Morkel on-site.

A source familiar with the matter informed TOI, "Gambhir maintains a strict stance on discipline. He addressed Morkel's tardiness immediately at the venue. The board has been made aware that Morkel appeared somewhat withdrawn for the remainder of the tour. It is essential for these two to resolve their differences for the team to operate effectively."

This incident has raised concerns regarding the dynamics within the coaching staff, and the BCCI is said to be closely observing the developments.

BCCI keeping a close watch on support staff

The BCCI is not only focusing on internal coaching issues but is also closely monitoring the overall performance of the support staff. The board has been gathering insights from senior players regarding the coaching staff's impact on the team's achievements.

One coaching position under examination is that of batting coach Abhishek Nayar, with renowned cricketer Sunil Gavaskar questioning his effectiveness following Virat Kohli's struggles with repeated edges in recent Test matches.

A source indicated, “Batting coach Abhishek Nayar is particularly being scrutinized. Gambhir, an accomplished batsman himself, has been asked by the board whether Nayar is introducing any innovative strategies.”

Concerns have also been expressed regarding assistant coach Ryan Ten Doeschate. His limited international experience and his capacity to significantly aid in the development of international cricketers have come under scrutiny.

In light of these issues, the BCCI is reportedly contemplating imposing limits on the contracts of support staff, potentially restricting their tenure to two to three years. “The board believes that loyalty issues may arise when coaches remain with the team for extended periods. However, they have benefited from a side-arm specialist who provides throwdowns,” the source noted.
