Gautam Gambhir in Talks with BCCI, Ready to Dedicate Time to Indian Cricket: Report

Following India's triumph in the Champions Trophy, the players have dispersed to join their respective IPL teams. In contrast, Gautam Gambhir, the head coach of the Indian cricket team, has alternative plans. He aims to utilize his available time to advance Indian cricket by overseeing and managing additional A tours. Since taking on the coaching role after India's T20 World Cup victory last year, Gambhir has encountered difficulties in sustaining the team's Test performance. India experienced a 0-3 defeat against New Zealand at home and subsequently lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy to Australia.

To avert a recurrence of recent setbacks during India's forthcoming five-Test series in England, scheduled over the next three months, Gambhir is taking proactive measures. In discussions with the BCCI, he has conveyed his intention to participate in the India 'A' tour to the UK, where he can closely observe emerging talents. Once a staple of Indian cricket, A tours have notably diminished in recent years, but Gambhir is resolute in restoring their significance. Unlike his predecessors, Rahul Dravid and Ravi Shastri, who opted to step back during the IPL, Gambhir is actively preparing to lead an India A tour, ensuring that fresh and promising players receive the recognition they merit.

According to a source quoted by The Times of India, "Gambhir has been in discussions with the BCCI since his return from Australia. He has expressed his desire to travel with the India 'A' team to gain a clearer perspective on the reserve pool. With India winning the Champions Trophy after Gambhir advocated for certain wildcard players, one might anticipate him to assert more influence in the future."

How will Gambhir approach India A tours?

It remains uncertain whether Gambhir will assume the role of mentor for the India A team or take over the coaching position currently occupied by VVS Laxman. However, Gambhir is wholeheartedly dedicated to this initiative. The primary objective of revitalizing the A tour program is to discover talent from India's extensive pool of players. With a focus on the 2027 World Cup and the forthcoming World Test Championship cycle, Gambhir, a two-time World Cup champion, is resolute in his mission to identify and develop the next generation of cricketers who can represent India with pride.

As the five-Test series against England is set to commence on June 20, Gambhir intends to arrive in the UK ahead of time to initiate his efforts. Historically, A tours were a common aspect of Indian cricket during Rahul Dravid's coaching era, but their occurrence diminished following his move to lead the senior men's team. With Gambhir now spearheading this revival, there is hope that the illustrious era of A tours—and the talent pipeline within Indian cricket—may be restored.

"A key concern that has been highlighted is the need to reinstate India A tours. There have been very few A series since Dravid departed from the NCA, and those that did occur were merely shadow tours in preparation for major series. Gambhir shares the belief that an increase in A tours is essential. This is why he aims to assess the situation directly," stated the source.
