Gautam Gambhir Under Fire: Former Teammate Calls for Accountability Following Australia's Tour Failures
2 months ago | 5 Views
Former Australian cricketer Brad Hogg has expressed his criticism of Gautam Gambhir following India's defeat in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, marking the end of a decade-long dominance. The Indian team was unable to replicate the competitive spirit displayed during their previous two tours to Australia, resulting in a series loss of 1-3. Additionally, this defeat led to their failure to qualify for the World Test Championship Final for the first time since the tournament's inception. The Indian head coach has faced scrutiny due to a disappointing start to his tenure, which included a home Test series loss to New Zealand by 0-3 prior to the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Gambhir had previously stated his desire for Indian players to demonstrate adaptability, yet Hogg contends that this quality was lacking throughout the five-match series.
"What Gautam Gambhir mentioned earlier was his expectation for players to be adaptable and to adopt an aggressive style of cricket. However, when it came to saving the Test match, they needed to employ their defensive strategies as well. Unfortunately, I have not observed this adaptability in the Indian team as we progressed," Hogg remarked on his YouTube channel.
The seasoned Australian spinner also emphasized the need for the selection panel to be held accountable for choosing players who did not perform under pressure.
"It is essential to consider the selection panel as well. Who was responsible for selecting the team? Who made the decisions regarding the squads in those critical situations? What is India's long-term strategy? India appeared poised to reach the World Test Championship final, yet they fell short. The past few months have been quite disappointing for them. Therefore, it is likely that the coaching staff will face increased pressure moving forward," he concluded.
‘Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have not been on the top of their game’
Hogg further emphasized that the decline of the India Test team in the current WTC cycle cannot be attributed to a single factor. He pointed out that prominent players such as Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have experienced poor performances in their recent series.
"Is it Gautam Gambhir who needs to be replaced, or should a new head coach bring in their own coaching staff? Perhaps the assistant coaches should also be reconsidered. However, during this challenging period, both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have been present, and neither has performed at their best. There are multiple factors to consider that have contributed to India's struggles at the Test level during this time," he concluded.
