Gautam Gambhir, the head coach of the Indian cricket team, has been threatened with death by 'ISIS Kashmir' following a severe terror attack on Tuesday in the city of Pahalgam located in Jammu and Kashmir. News agency ANI cited Gautam Gambhir's office, stating that the former BJP MP contacted the police and lodged an official complaint to ensure the safety of his family. According to India Today, Gambhir received the menacing message via e-mail, which included three horrifying words 'I kill you'.
"Former BJP MP and the current head coach of the Indian cricket team, Gautam Gambhir, has been threatened with death by 'ISIS Kashmir'. On Wednesday, he reached out to the Delhi Police, filing a formal complaint for an FIR and requesting actions to protect his family’s security," the office stated.
On Tuesday, Gambhir received two menacing emails, one in the afternoon and one in the evening, both delivering the identical message. This was not the first occurrence of such threats; in November 2021, during his tenure as a Member of Parliament, Gambhir had received a comparable email.
Gambhir had recently taken a trip to France with his family for a vacation, but returned to the country earlier this month. He has been out of the public eye following India's Champions Trophy victory in March. As cricketers are currently participating in the Indian Premier League 2025, the head coaches enjoy a break during the course of the tournament. Gambhir was appointed as Team India’s head coach in July of the previous year, succeeding his World Cup-winning predecessor Rahul Dravid.
Gambhir was among the numerous Indian sports figures to speak out against the Pahalgam terror attacks. "Praying for the families of the deceased. Those responsible for this will pay. India will strike," he posted on X.
Gambhir as India coach
Meanwhile, Gambhir has savored his recent experience as head coach. Following the beginning of his term, which started poorly, losing the ODIs in Sri Lanka and the Test series against New Zealand at home 0-3, Gambhir faced criticism after India lost to Australia 1-3 and had to relinquish the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after holding it for eight years. To make matters worse, the way in which the dressing room conversations were revealed to the media caused a stir and raised doubts about the integrity of the Indian cricket team.
Fortunately, the situation improved when India secured the Champions Trophy undefeated, defeating New Zealand in the final to claim their second ICC trophy in nine months.
