A peculiar incident transpired on Sunday during the singles match of the Davis Cup tie between Belgium's Zizou Bergs and Chile's Cristian Garin. The latter was disqualified following an unusual collision with Bergs in a contentious moment.

The event occurred in the third set after Bergs achieved a break in the 11th game, placing Belgium on the brink of victory. Garin's return hit the net after an extended rally, eliciting a significant reaction from the audience. In response to gaining a lead in the set, Bergs dashed towards his bench and inadvertently collided with Garin, causing him to fall to the ground.

Bergs promptly expressed his apologies as Garin lay on the ground with his hands covering his face, while medical personnel attended to him. This incident resulted in a prolonged interruption of the match, with the Chilean team advocating for Garin's disqualification due to unsportsmanlike behavior.

Later on Sunday, the International Tennis Federation issued a statement characterizing the event as "an accidental collision at the change of ends," noting that "the independent doctor determined Garin was fit to continue." Nevertheless, Garin opted not to resume play after Bergs received only a warning.

Garin's behavior led to three consecutive time violations, culminating in a game penalty, which resulted in his loss of both the set and the match.

Bergs ultimately triumphed with scores of 6-3, 4-6, 7-5, ensuring Belgium's advancement with a 3-1 victory. The team is set to face Australia in September.

The ITF remarked, "This was a rare, unfortunate, and very delicate situation, and all parties involved, including the independent doctor, acted in accordance with established rules and procedures."

They added, "We recognize the emotions surrounding this unusual incident, but the final decision was reached after careful consideration of all relevant facts and the unique circumstances involved."

Chile's Olympic committee expressed its discontent on X, stating it was "upset and incredulous" regarding the situation and pledged to support the Chilean tennis federation to ensure that this disgraceful international incident does not go unaddressed.
