Ganguly Sounds Alarm for Pakistan: What Rizwan & Babar Must Do to Stay in Champions Trophy

The eagerly awaited match of the ICC Champions Trophy group stages is imminent, as Pakistan travels to Dubai to face India in a significant encounter between these fierce competitors. India commenced their campaign with a victory over Bangladesh, while Pakistan suffered a disappointing defeat against New Zealand. This outcome has prompted former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly to express his belief that India will likely exit the tournament during the group stage.
During an event organized by Vura, a company specializing in construction chemicals, where Ganguly serves as a brand ambassador, he conveyed his expectation that India would maintain its dominance over Pakistan in international competitions.
“India is a formidable team in white-ball cricket. The recent history against Pakistan indicates that India has had the upper hand for an extended period,” Ganguly remarked.
“In the past 25 years, to the best of my recollection, India has lost to Pakistan only once in a world tournament—be it the Champions Trophy, World Cup, or T20 World Cup.” That solitary defeat occurred in the final of the last Champions Trophy, where Pakistan emerged as the champions in a commanding performance.
‘Pakistan doesn’t play spin very well…'
Eight years later, Ganguly expressed his support for India throughout the tournament. “India is not only the favourite against Pakistan but, in my view, they are the favourites to win the entire tournament,” remarked the former left-handed batsman.
Ganguly elaborated that the presence of quality spinners in the Indian lineup distinguishes them from their opponents. Although Pakistan has performed well against spin in One Day Internationals recently, they have faced challenges against New Zealand, particularly with left-arm orthodox bowler Mitchell Santner causing issues for their batting lineup.
With India featuring both Axar Patel and Ravindra Jadeja, Ganguly suggested that Pakistan may encounter significant difficulties.
“On the Dubai pitch, spinners will be essential. I anticipate that the surface will turn somewhat, and Pakistan has not been particularly adept at handling spin. India possesses exceptional spinners,” he stated.
In conclusion, Ganguly predicted that India and New Zealand would be the two teams to advance, especially if Pakistan were to suffer two defeats. In such a scenario, Pakistan would require both Bangladesh and India to defeat New Zealand and would then rely on net run-rate for qualification.
"New Zealand has already triumphed over Pakistan. Therefore, New Zealand is currently in a stronger position. If India defeats Pakistan, it is likely that Pakistan will be eliminated from the tournament. Thus, I foresee India and New Zealand advancing from this group,” Ganguly concluded.
