Gambhir's Coaching Journey: BCCI Faces Pressure for Evaluation
2 months ago | 5 Views
Gautam Gambhir's tenure as head coach of the Indian cricket team has been far from commendable. Taking over from the successful World Cup-winning coach, Rahul Dravid, Gambhir has faced significant challenges during his time in charge. Aside from a T20I series victory against Sri Lanka, his record is lacking. Notably, he has suffered a 0-3 defeat at home to New Zealand, a similar loss in ODIs against Sri Lanka, and a 1-3 defeat in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, all of which have put him under considerable scrutiny.
With a crucial year ahead for the Indian men's cricket team, including the Champions Trophy and a five-Test series in England, Gambhir's performance will be closely evaluated if results do not improve. Currently leading the T20I squad against England, followed by ODIs, his real challenge will come with the Champions Trophy starting on February 9. As India, having won in 2013 and finished as runners-up in 2017, is among the favorites, any further setbacks in Dubai could jeopardize Gambhir's position.
Nevertheless, Aakash Chopra believes that Gambhir's job security will not be threatened even if the team falters in the Champions Trophy. The former Indian opener suggests that the BCCI should conduct a comprehensive evaluation of Gambhir's successes and failures only after he has completed at least a year in his role. Since Gambhir was officially appointed head coach in July of the previous year, Chopra is optimistic that the BCCI will assess his performance following the conclusion of the five-Test series in England.
The BCCI is unlikely to make any statements regarding Gambhir until the conclusion of the England tour.
"I anticipate another tour to England. I do not believe the BCCI will address him until that time. Following the England tour, it will have been a year since he assumed his position. The expectation was to facilitate a transition within that timeframe. Therefore, an evaluation can be conducted based on his performance there, the players he has developed, and any improvements in the team's results," Chopra remarked on his YouTube channel.
"Nonetheless, a minimum of one year in the role is essential for assessing an individual's performance. A full 12 months is necessary. Thus, I believe that the England tour, rather than the Champions Trophy, will serve as a significant benchmark for reviewing Gautam Gambhir's performance. It is reasonable to evaluate the performances of both batters and bowlers, and the same should apply to the coach," Chopra continued.
During India's last tour of England, the series ended in a 2-2 draw under the leadership of Virat Kohli and Ravi Shastri, with Jasprit Bumrah stepping in as captain for the rescheduled fifth Test at Edgbaston the following year. A series loss in Australia, coupled with another defeat in England, could lead to serious consequences—not only for Gambhir but also for several prominent players on the team. While it seems unlikely that Rohit Sharma will participate in the England tour, circumstances may change in the next five months. The situation may differ for Virat Kohli, as a disappointing series could significantly impact his legacy.
