The aftermath of India's disappointing performance in the 2024/25 season, which resulted in their failure to qualify for the World Test Championship Final for the first time, includes a controversy regarding the alleged leakage of head coach Gautam Gambhir's remarks to the players to the media. Former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali has commented that such revelations are detrimental to the team environment and has urged India to address this issue promptly, especially with the 2025 Champions Trophy on the horizon.

"Rumors are suggesting that Sarfaraz Khan was responsible for leaking the discussions from the dressing room and the board meeting. This is an unfavourable development that undermines team cohesion. The sooner this matter is resolved, the better," Basit stated on his YouTube channel. The issue of dressing room leaks was discussed during the BCCI's review meeting on January 11, where it was reported that Gambhir held Sarfaraz accountable. "There should be no blame game, and Gautam Gambhir must take responsibility in this situation. Sarfaraz was not present in the (BCCI review) meeting," Basit added.

The 54-year-old further emphasized the importance of India securing victories against England in their forthcoming ODI series at home. This series serves as a crucial preparation for the Champions Trophy for both teams, with the tournament commencing on February 19, just a week after the third ODI in Ahmedabad.

"A different team will emerge for the Champions Trophy. A victory against England would bolster the team's morale, whereas a loss could significantly diminish their confidence."

'Such news are spread to affect the team environment'

Basit emphasized the necessity for alignment among the BCCI chairman Roger Binny, the selectors, captain Rohit Sharma, and the players to establish a cohesive team. He further remarked that leaks and similar news are detrimental to the team environment, and players must remain vigilant against such occurrences.

"Much like the PCB, there are four essential components – the chairman, selectors, captain, and players. Their unity is crucial for building a successful team, and they must share a common mindset. In the case of the BCCI, these four pillars must operate in harmony. Such information is disseminated with the intent to disrupt the team atmosphere, and the media plays a significant role in this. Whether the focus is on Virat, Rohit, or another group, such as Gambhir, the impact is felt," stated Basit.
