Gambhir Supports Yashasvi Jaiswal for Captaincy, Clashing with Ajit Agarkar's Selection Panel

One of the key subjects addressed during the recent BCCI review meeting in Mumbai was the prospective captain for the Indian Test and ODI teams. Rohit Sharma, whose leadership faced criticism following a disappointing performance in the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, reportedly informed the selectors that he intends to continue as captain until the board designates his successor. However, a new report from Dainik Jagran indicated that coach Gautam Gambhir and the selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, have identified a potential replacement for Rohit’s captaincy but encountered disagreements.
On Sunday, the national daily reported that Rohit placed the decision in the hands of the BCCI by stating that he would remain captain until the board selects the next leader for Tests and ODIs. The 37-year-old, whose recent form has raised concerns among selectors, also expressed his commitment to fully support his successor. Consequently, it was determined that Rohit would retain the captaincy for the upcoming Champions Trophy, with selectors to reassess the situation following the tournament.
On Monday, a new report from Dainik Jagran highlighted that during discussions regarding the potential for Jasprit Bumrah to succeed Rohit, the necessity for a robust vice-captain was also emphasized to effectively manage the fast bowler's workload. While selectors considered Rishabh Pant as a candidate for the Test captaincy, Gambhir advocated for Yashasvi Jaiswal.
It is worth noting that Pant, who has previously captained the Delhi team in domestic competitions, led the Indian side during the home T20I series against South Africa in June 2022, stepping in for the injured KL Rahul.
Suryakumar Yadav as ODI captain?
Suryakumar was appointed as the captain of India's T20I team in July of the previous year, following Rohit's retirement from this format after the conclusion of the T20 World Cup. Nevertheless, the prospect of him assuming the captaincy in ODI cricket after the Champions Trophy has been diminished, as he has not yet established a consistent position in the ODI format.
Given that India is unlikely to adopt a strategy of having three different captains for each format, reports suggest that Bumrah is expected to lead both the Test and ODI teams. This is contingent upon the selectors choosing a capable vice-captain who can assume leadership duties during Bumrah's absence, similar to the arrangement in Australia with Pat Cummins.
