Varun Chakaravarthy's selection for India's Champions Trophy 2025 squad, replacing Yashasvi Jaiswal, has garnered significant attention, especially following the spinner's absence from the third and final ODI against England. Less than a day after being named in the squad, Chakaravarthy was ruled out of the match due to a sore right calf.

Kuldeep Yadav stepped in for him in Ahmedabad, and with Chakaravarthy's inclusion, the Indian team now boasts five spinners, indicating that spin bowling may play a crucial role in India's hybrid model fixtures.

Gautam Gambhir justifies decision

Gautam Gambhir, the head coach of India, provided insight into the decision to select Chakaravarthy over Jaiswal. He stated, "The primary reason was our need for an additional wicket-taking option in the middle overs, and we are aware of the value Varun Chakravarthy brings."

Describing Chakaravarthy as an 'X-factor,' Gambhir emphasized that even if he does not make the playing XI, his presence enhances the strength of the bowling attack. "Varun can pose a significant threat, especially to teams that are unfamiliar with him, and he could serve as an X-factor. While I won't assert that he will start, having a robust bowling lineup is always advantageous," he remarked.

Additionally, Gambhir expressed optimism for Jaiswal's future, stating, "We recognize that if he can secure wickets in the middle overs, it will be beneficial. This was one of the reasons for the selection, but we also acknowledge that Yashasvi has a bright future ahead; we simply had to limit our selection to 15 players."

Chakaravarthy made his debut for India on July 25, 2021, participating in 18 T20Is but only one ODI, which was against England on February 9. In contrast, Jaiswal debuted in ODIs during the same series and has played in 23 T20Is and 18 Tests, making his India debut on July 12, 2023.
