Gael Monfils made history in the world of tennis on January 11 (Saturday) by becoming the oldest player to secure an ATP Tour title. He achieved this milestone with a 6-3, 6-4 victory against Belgian qualifier Zizou Bergs in the final of the Auckland Classic. At the age of 38 years and 132 days, Monfils surpassed the previous record held by Roger Federer, who won his last ATP title at the Swiss Indoors in 2019 at 38 years and 74 days.

This victory in Auckland represents Monfils's 13th career title, occurring 20 years after he won his first in 2005. The French player showcased his characteristic combination of aggressive shot-making and steadfast defense, dominating Bergs, who was competing in his inaugural ATP final. Monfils broke his opponent's serve early in both sets and remained composed against Bergs's attempts to mount a comeback.

Monfils's success is a reflection of his enduring love for tennis, a sentiment he expressed prior to the tournament. "I love tennis. I love what I’m doing, so all the sacrifices are easier," he stated. Despite his age, he conveyed confidence in his ability to maintain a high level of play, asserting, “I still have the passion to play tennis, I still feel like I strike a very good ball.”

In celebration of his historic achievement, Monfils let out a triumphant roar and flexed his muscles for the audience, emphasizing that age has not hindered his performance. "Age is a number but I keep working," he commented, taking pride in his accomplishments. Following this victory, he ascends to 41st in the ATP rankings, an improvement of 11 places, as he prepares to head to Melbourne for the Australian Open.

Having won his first ATP title two decades ago, Monfils is set to face fellow Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in the opening round of the Australian Open. With the momentum from his Auckland victory, Monfils demonstrates that age does not impede success at the highest levels of tennis.
