From Spin to Spotlight: LSG Rookie Calls on Pant, Cites Narine as Muse

Lucknow Super Giants spinner Digvesh Rathi shared how observing Sunil Narine's bowling style transformed his approach, enabling him to adopt a more aggressive bowling technique. In a remarkable performance against the five-time champions, Mumbai Indians, on Friday, Digvesh conceded only 21 runs in four overs. The right-arm leg-break bowler took the vital wicket of Naman Dhir while maintaining an impressive economy rate of 5.20, in contrast to his teammates, who allowed over 10.00 runs per over.

The 25-year-old was accompanied by his captain, Rishabh Pant, who acted as his translator during the Player of the Match presentation. Pant graciously conveyed Digvesh's thoughts to Ian Bishop, emphasizing that his primary focus was on attacking the batsman and seeking wickets.

"I am truly enjoying my performance. I prefer to be aggressive towards the batsman and aim for wickets whenever I bowl," Digvesh stated after receiving the Player of the Match award.

Digvesh acknowledged that he draws inspiration from the experienced Kolkata Knight Riders spinner Sunil Narine and aspires to emulate his attacking mindset in pursuit of wickets.

"Ever since I began watching Sunil Narine bowl, I have found joy in my own bowling. I aim to adopt a more aggressive mindset similar to his over the years. He remains composed under pressure, and I want to develop that quality in my game," Digvesh remarked.

“Wanted a fielder at mid-wicket but the skipper did not…”

The 25-year-old's sole wicket came at a pivotal moment, dismissing the formidable Naman Dhir, who had posed a significant threat with a brisk 46 runs off 24 deliveries, featuring four boundaries and three sixes.

"Prior to that over, I discussed with you (Pant) my wish for a fielder at mid-wicket, but the captain did not accommodate that request. Consequently, I aimed to bowl at the stumps, anticipating he would attempt that shot," Digvesh explained.

In the meantime, LSG's victory over Mumbai Indians by 12 runs propelled them to sixth place in the IPL standings. The Lucknow franchise has struggled with consistency, primarily due to a lack of overseas strength in their bowling lineup, which has hindered their performance in several matches. Additionally, the form of captain Pant raises concerns, as the tournament's most expensive player has managed only 19 runs across four matches thus far.
